So as part of my Continuing Education Units for me to maintain my CSCS, I went to a sports nutrition seminar this past weekend sponsored by the International Society of Sports Nutritionists (ISSN)
http://www.sportsnutritionsociety.org/site/index.php
The first topic that was covered was on supplements that enhance lean muscle mass. Whey, Casein, Amino Acids, aromatase inhibitors, and creatine ethyl ester were covered. Here are some brief notes.....
Amino Acids - I've never been a big supporter of amino acid supplementation, particulary if you are getting enough protein from whole foods, but I know there are many people that swear by the BCAAs and their muscle sparing effects and insulin stimulation. The first biggest surprise of the day came when the topic of AA delivery came up. I had always assumed that all studies were conducted using an oral delivery method but I was surprised to find that many actually use direct blood infusion, ie an IV straight into the vein. This is a huge realization when you consider that infusion obviously yields nearly 100% delivery of AA into the blood and oral delivery is next to nothing due to the destructive power of the GI Tract. Bottom line, amino acid supplementation has been shown to have anti catabolic and anabolic properties, however you'd need to inject yourself to see any real benefits......and who is going to do that?
Whey and casein are still the best sources of protein supplementation, whey being quickly absorbed and casein a sustained release protein. No surprises.
Aromatase inhibitors - this is some weird stuff. Basically this is suppose to stop the enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen.....less estrogen, more testosterone, bigger muscles, etc. NOTE: I'm not going to touch this stuff...mess with your hormones at your own risk.
Creatine Ethyl Ester - Creatine monohydrate just isn't sexy anymore, read this for more info: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/cee.html
Well that's pretty much it, comments?
