2006 NCAA Rules:

A1 shoots and scores a goal just before the end of the first period. The ball enters the goal just before the horn sounds, and the officials rule it a legal goal. The officials select A1 for a crosse inspection between periods.

During the crosse inspection, the officials discover that the ball does not roll freely from the pocket, with the ball either remaining in the pocket when the head is rotated toward the ground and held horizontally or the ball sticking momentarily before rolling out. The pocket of the crosse is not too deep.

1) What penalty do you apply, if any?

2) Can the crosse return to the game if adjusted?

1) I would give him a 3 min NR, and strike the goal from the record, since there was not an intervening faceoff after the goal was scored and the scorer's stick was checked.

2) The player can return the stick to the next game after making adjustments, but not this one. The stick should remain untouched at the table area for the duration of the game.

I did notice that if you have a deep pocket violation AND the ball will not freely disengage from the pocket in the other tests, that the referee has the option to award a 1 min NR penalty and allow the stick to be adjusted, if IHHO the deep pocket was the cause of the ball being restricted. No potential can of worms there. ("Coach, it's MY opinion, not yours!)

Here's the key A.R.:

A.R. 6: During the crosse inspection, the officials discover that the ball does not roll freely from the pocket, with the ball either remaining in the pocket when the head is rotated toward the ground and held horizontally or the ball sticking momentarily before rolling out. RULING: 3:00 non-releasable penalty and the stick is removed from the game whether the ball is being held by the head or by the stringing. (Exception: If the pocket is too deep and the officials feel that the pocket depth is the reason the ball will not release, a 1:00 nonreleasable penalty may be assessed and the crosse may return if adjusted.)

The key here is that you can only give the 1:00 NR penalty and allow the crosse to return if adjusted if the pocket is too deep. If the pocket is not too deep and the ball fails to dislodge freely, you must give the 3:00 NR and the stick is confiscated.

There could be a coach trying to argue this at some point, but when you announce the foul you don't need to tell them every aspect of the decision. I'm not going to say "Well, the ball wouldn't dislodge, which is normally 3:000 NR, but the pocket is deep, but then again I don't think that the deep pocket is what's holding it. I think it's really the head that is holding it in there, so I'm giving the 3:00 NR foul." I'm just going to say, "Illegal crosse, crosse fails rollout test. 3:00 NR and the stick stays on the table."

And, anyway, how many coaches are going to be on top of this rule change?

I saw this happen in Princeton during the Maryland and Georgetown quarter final game in 2005. It was a 3:00 NR penalty on Maryland, which ultimately cost them the game!

i agree, my coach used to have a wooden dowel (sp). for stick inspections.. he also used a measuring tape on occasion as well, and believe me you didn't want to get caught with an illegal stick..
