Do most of you flip/twirl your stick?
I do, and the coach at this clinic told me not to. I do it becauce of force of habit and because it gets the ball directly to the pocket.
what are some pros and cons of it?

I used to do it all the time, but my coach hated it and made me do 15 push ups every time he saw me do it, so I twirl a lot less now.

yeah i would say the only is that maybe it looks cool, but most coaches hate it and you start to realize how it can mess you up, maybe that extra half a second it takes for your stick to twirl around cost you that feed to the cutter, or let your stick hang out for that extra half second the defense man needs

just for my clarification, what are we saying is twirling? When i spin it at my waist in a settled situation? Or add a spin in the middle of a craddle? Or when kid catches the ball and has to give the stick a full rotation? or what exactly?

lol i twirl so much. I dont know why, but it doesnt affect my performance or anything. For me it does the same as cradling.

I stopped twirling the ball in my stick after I twirled the ball in my stick and took a shot at the goal and the ball went wide. We had to go into overtime we still won but that got me to stop twirling it because i knew i could have scored if i didn't twirl it.

I twirl. I can't not twirl my stick. I twirl it once right before I'm going to shoot or pass. My coach gets pretty pissed off, but he gave up on trying to get rid of my habit or twirling a while ago. Twirling helps me by getting the ball in the pocket. If I didn't twirl, my passes would be 20 feet of 20% of the time.

quoted for emphasis,
unless you like getting yelled at by your coach and crushing hits from defensemen because you dont get rid of the ball fast enough.

twirling is gay...sorry just wanted to put that out there, you dont really control the stick while you're twirling, like most people will cup one of their hands not holding the stick so the stick can easily spin, therefore you have less control over the ball...i would 1/2 consider going out of my way to embaress someone who twirls(okay well maybe not, but still they shouldnt do it) seriously break the habit, how many pro's or even college players do you see twirl their sticks?

if you twirl youll get used to it and twirl before everything. and if you catch a shot on the crease or such and try to twirl you will absolutely get killed. dont twirl. buy a powergrip shaft. that will help you stop. it worked for my little brother.

yeaaa do not spin the friggin shaft there is no point for it, it doesn't make you better it takes up that fraction of a second that you will most of the time need and cradling does the same exact thing like the worst habit you could ever develop break it as soon as possible

well what about doing it before a split or face dodge, yes i know this is an old thread but i was directed here. anyways i do not do it before throwing or passing, but do if i
a) catch the ball like in front of my face, or ocasionally when i catch to get better control of it
b) every once in a while on a horizontal cradle
c) and a split or face dodge
are those ok to do?

I never do it except sometimes before I start a split dodge I roll my stick forward, its kind of like a power cradle. I dont thinks its bad the way I do it becuase I never do it before I pass or shoot.

My first stick was an F-10 Powergrip and dear god did I twirl. Just focus on not doing it.
If you're still new you'll eventually learn to stop, if you've been in the game for a while and still do it, it's probably because no one ever told you to stop. My first coach never yelled at me for it so I always did it. Though I do have relapses when I'm standing with the ball waiting for the whistle or while I'm setting up an iso. It's not that bad as long as you're not under pressure.

One really bad habit i have that sometimes causes me to drop the ball or miss my quick shot is right when i catch the ball I immediatly twirl my sitck to get it in. It may seem a little helpful but it is bad.

when i first started playing i twirled when i passed or shot. now i dont twirl at all, but honestly i dont really feel like theres a difference. when i used to twirl, id catch the ball, cradle or w/e until i wanted to pass or shoot, then id twirl once as i moved my hand down the shaft. so doesnt that take the same amount of time as just moving your hand down the shaft?

anything more than one twirl is bad. i got into that a few months ago, and i knew it wasnt good. every time before i would dodge form up top...i was the iso midddie...i would twirl the stick right before i would break in the other direction, and sometime lose the ball, and feel like an idiot. since then i have broken the habit, but it was bad while it lasted.

Twirling is really bad beacuse if your doing it and someone cuts really fast your not in a position to pass you have your stick spinning around not in a passing position.

i ****ing hate this i dont know how i even started it..its gonna be hard to break but im trying
just walk around and cradle PERFECTLY. even if your not at practice or anything, just go outside and pick up your stick and walk around cradling with the right form, and the whole time be really cautious about not cradling. if you do this alot, you will eventually break the habit.
