if i square up to the goal and shoot straight overhand, it's a lot easier to aim, but it gives me no deception, because u can see my entire stick the whole time.
when i rotate my back so that the head of my stick is behind my head, causing deception, the plane the stick has to travel is sort of in a circular motion. This is obvious because the stick needs to go around my head.
I've practiced the deception shot, and i've gotten decent at it, however, it's a lot harder to control than if i had my stick travel in a perfectly straight path.
I always hear shoot straight overhand, but i also hear use deception, is there something i'm doing wrong? On the run it's easier, but when i'm in close i want to hid my stick, but i also don't want the ball to fly out and miss the goal.
If it matters, i have the Offensive Wizardy tape, and have watched it many times. It seems in his video when he says shoto straight overhand, his stick still goes in a circular path.

Well instead of doing an overhand shot try a 3/4 shot. That shot has deception in of itself. Since its diagonal by either releasing early or late (depending on how much wrist snapping u put into it) the ball will either get the top or bottom corner. Try that or the side arm shot.
If your having trouble holding ur stick behind ur back practice bottom hand shots. Also don't forget to cradle... making sure the ball stays in. If your ball comes out then your problem lies in ur stringing. Try creating a bit more whip... u don't need much though.
EDIT: oh and when ur in close... u don't need to worry about deception especially if it might risk having a defender knock the ball out. just keep ur stick in tight till the last second and rip a shot. Even then though, you shouldn't be in that situation... try taking your shots from the wings after dodging and loosing your defender.

You should also try stepping far pipe and shooting near pipe, vice versa. It's very hard to do at first because your body goes against itself, but this is what Joe Walters has been known to do and it throws goalies off tremendously. With a lot of practice, this will create a lot of deception for an overhand shot.

I fake up go down. Thats my "deception". Another way i like to go is sidearm. Ive got it to the point i can throw sidearm so it looks as if its going to nearpole but its crosses the goalie low and to the left, if i was shooting from the right. It usally works very well.

you can drop your shoulders and head for a split second and tehn shoot high on a overhand shot, it's one of john grant jr. and kelusky's favorite moves. I'll find you a video of it...http://e-lacrosse.com/2004/heritagecup/c32t24hb.gif

Sounds like you're not getting much body turn. Whether you shoot side-arm, overhand, or underhand, your goal should be to reach straight back the same way for each shot and give yourself the option to shoot any of those ways. If you can do it well, the goalie will be surprised when you choose a different shot.
Make sure you're reaching back as far as you can. Turn your shoulders, and I could care less what a few videos say about where your hands come through. If you want to make it easy on yourself to learn deception on an overhand shot, don't swing your arms out. Throw them at the target, right by your ear hole. The stick comes next, and essentially stays hidden as it moves. Pull down with your hands and shoot hard.
When I first heard this I thought it was crap, I did not shoot that way, but I tried it and its changed my game. The release is quicker, as well as the wind up, and it can still generate a ton of power with some practice.

Use your head and shoulders to fool the goalie. If you look up and move your shoulders before you shoot to see where th goalie moves you can basically put the ball anywhere the goalie can't get to. Usually its a short bounce shot past their off stick foot.

If you line up correctly overhand your stick should be 100% blocked from the goalie's p.o.v. It's hard to explain but try this. Stand in front of a mirror staggered (like the way you see sprinters lined up foot-wise). Then take the stick and keep it at an angle so that your body blocks the stick's head from the goalie seeing it. If you can't see the head in the mirror, then the goalie won't be able to in the game. Overhand is the way to go :)

in close just go overhand you dont need deception other than body language and fakes you probably dont even need to do that just find the open spot and burry it also you can do a behind the back
