so i know there is a sticky on dodges so dont flame me. sadly he only says that you should do one dodge behind the cage. the finalizer. now i like the finalizer, its great, really! but my coach hates fancy crap and only wants us to make one move then go to the cage. so there goes the finalizer.

so what is the best single dodge to do behind the cage? spilt? roll? face? recently ive been having a lot of success going lefty, then spiltting to the right. this is working but defensemen catch on pretty quick. so any suggestions?

the split for sure, inside roll, the hard roll dodge, and the stop and go..

INSIDE ROLL:

SPLIT DODGE: (even though this shows powell coming from the side of the cage)

better example of the split from behind:

stop and go as performed by my teammate Ryan Carter of Butler University:

split dodge... get him goin one way, split, and get him to trip over the net. all you've gotta worry about then is the slide.

I agree, start with the split and in my case, try and finish with a question mark as you come around the cage if don't fully shake your defender.

split or inside roll id say would be the best. when u split, do it fairly close to the cage to try and get the dman hung up on the back of the cage

Whoops.
The section on where to use dodges wasn't saying that the only dodge that can be done behind the cage is the finalizer or the split can only be done it open field: it was meant to show what type of dodges to use in certain situations.
That being said, any north-south dodge will work well behind the cage (split, face, roll, bull) since you are trying to do one thing: beat the defender to the goal. Once you have managed to get past your opponent you have an easy goal.
If you're fast, a simple C dodge (running around the goal) may also work.

the finalizer isnt a fancy move. ppl pull it off without even knowing. you just have the ball longer than regular dodges.

Definitly the split.....Get good enough where it doesn't matter what hand you start in and end in. And even if you can just shoot with your off hand you will be unstopable.

Definately rocker or split. I'm really quick so when I do a split dodge (my most common dodge) I leave my defender most of the time and look for an open man if I get picked up.

Wheelax's first post was dead on! I made a living in college with the inside roll & rocker. Everyone knew it was coming, but knowing and stopping it are 2 different things. Especially if you can feed out of either. Don't be afraid to pull it out if things aren't working as planned, or you need to free your hands to feed. I'm no athlete, you'd never guess I used to be a player, but for my last 2 season in college I averaged over 5ppg, and drew the best defender each game. Why be good at 15 moves, when you can be great at 2 or 3...

It's really amazing that each dodge is just a bait and change of direction. Anyone can do a face, a split is very basic, but important. A roll & rocker are absolute add ons, and anything else is a bonus, but usually un-necessary. I personally believe a good roll on a charging defender is probably the prettiest dodge around, but each their own.

I keep hearing about the finalizer but am not sure what the big deal is. Anyone know of where I can find a video clip of it?

Thanks!

Here Hitman http://www.mikeypowell.com/mikeypowell.php?section=mikeypowell&page=reel somwhere around 2/3s the way through

and I have to say it is so fun to practice the hard roll because if they bite for it and get their ankles broken (figuratively speaking), you can hold it over them for forever. (its great)

Ok, the finalizer is a combo of a few dogdes behind the cage. The 1st part is lead the defender to one side of the goal, then roll dodge towards the other side of the cage. Next, lead the defender to the other side, roll dodge again and lead the defender to the other side again. Finally, do a duck-under on the defender and sprint around the cagea and get a shot in.

A great combo, very difficult for a goalie to save: face/roll/split from X, whatever you pefer, then question-mark dodge, and coming off that, rip a shot. A ? dodge is just what it looks like, you stay with the defender between you and the goal while coming around the crease, then as you get to about 9-11 o'clock, with the front of the goal being 12, you reverse directions, and sort of roll off your defenser, and shoot.

a question mark dogde is almost a fade away shot really tough you have to be good at it

No, no, no.

A question mark dodge should NOT be a fadeaway dodge. That is improper technique. The point of a question mark is that as you fade back, you curl back in for your shot so you have some power on it. If you make it a fade away shot, you lose all of your momentum and power on the shot.

As a defenseman I think you definately have to mix it up. Throw in some random, but quality dodges to keep him honest. I personally hate when the attackman is really fast, goes right down the middle then splits really quickley to force a slide. In the process, if the d-man doesn't know where the net is, it can be pretty desasterous if you can get him going.
