No, if you are worried about your growth being stunted by doing exercises, just learn perfect form and don't go extremely heavy, you will be fine. Yes larger quads would help, but remember keep your legs even with leg curls, etc. You don't want a muscle imbalance. OH, and hey whats wrong with those muscular "tank" looking people?

14???.....You need to start with lighter weights with lots of reps.,3 times a week.

No he doesn't.

I'm the perfect example of lifting not stunting your growth. I go to the gym regualary and leg press 5 times my bodyweight, and over the last year I have grown about 3-4 inches taller.

Anyway - at 14, I'd lift, but avoid working up to a very high maximum. As far as becoming musclebound with oversized quads.......it really won't happen! Building muscle like that is stupidly hard work!

There are all kinds of theories about what lifting does or doesn't do for you.

Sad thing is is that most of these are developed by muscleheads who aren't necessarily all that educated about the way the body works. The uneducated guys that just read MuscleMag and hang around the gym may think they know everything, but many are total dopes.

To get the real goods, I think you have to find a muscular MD, or maybe a guy with a graduate degree in physiology*......these guys will "get it" in theory and in practice and be able to really help you.

*My brother is one of these - MS in physiology, and natural class competitive amateur powerlifter. One day, he will write a book that will change powerlifting!

Regaurdless, it is not good to have a muscle imbalance. I agree. If the book will be that good, be sure to send me a copy.

Right now I'm 5'10-5'11 and I'm about the same size as my dad and slowly I'm starting to get just a bit taller than him.

actually it will slightly stunt your growth, but not because of the weight. Your body, instead of trying to grow taller, will put its energy into healing your muscles.

Just don't max out right away, work your way into any and all excersises, and keep a good form. This will get you the most out of your workout and shouldn't stunt your growth.

Kind of.

This whole thought train stems from puberty. There are 5 stages to puberty. In stage 3 (usually from like 12-14, but some get out of it early), growth plates are at the weakest they'll ever be. If you lift weights with poor form and/or injure yourself by trying to lift too much, you could stunt your growth. Just don't be dumb and try to max out at 300 anytime soon, k? If you want to be sure, don't go to total muscle failure until you've been working out for a year or you're like 17. I don't have my little book about it but I think stage 3 is either when your voice deepens, you start growing pubic, facial, armpit, back, and torso (chest/stomach) hair (usually in that order), and your Adam's Apple begins to develop (along with a few other minor things that you'd only know if you do "naughty" things ;)). The reason S3 Puberty is the time in which your growth plates are the most vulnerable is because that's when the most growing and changing occurs. They're already under a lot of stress from the growth, and so adding the stress CAN either retard your growth or stop it completely. But don't worry about it too much. Coffee (or any other high-caffeine product) is probably more likely to retard your growth than lifting (with proper form and weight).

lifting does not stunt your growth. Any one starting out lifting regardless of age should take time out to work with light wieghts and get picture perfect form, before they hit heavy wieghts.
