how do you get noticed on d?

just pay attention.....i dont really understand what you mean by get noticed...like if you want to start, or you just want to make the team there's 2 different standards there..............to make the team it's obvious just pay attention, show appreciation & that you want to play, if you want to start well you simply have to be the best your teams got....some kids go for the be best buds with the coach to start, & ive got nothing against chillin w/ coaches, my coaches have always been great guys, but that shouldn't be why you start.....if you wanna start then you need to be the best...& to be the best you need to practice certain things....to find out what those "things" are use the search bar, cause im kinda tired & need to end this post so i can go to bed

Really though just play good effective d, and make sure to get your share of ground balls, it got me recruited.

let me break it down for you like this.... you must, and I repeat must, be absolutely dominant

How do you do this you ask...

well,,, let's say you are paired up with what is supposed to be a great attackman... hmm. what do you do... well, you beat him physically in to oblivian... embarass him..????..!!!!!

Get to where you are good with your right and left hands, good footwork, and good at clearing the ball. Poke and wrap checks always get attention.

yeah, so my other post was a little random, but here's what u need to do:

1) get in the weight room and be able to bench a car
2) talk a lot (who's hot, backside, cutter, etc..)
3) be a clearing specialist.. too often long poles become a liability when trying to clear. you should have the stick skills of an attackman, be able to go both right and left, throw darts for passes, and catch everything
4) don't be afraid to carry it over on offense
5) physically dominate your opponent/don't worry so much about taking the ball away, stay in front of him and never let them go where they want to
6) don't talk to your attackman when your team has the ball on the other end (this might sound rude or whatever, but when I play attack and my guy doesn't say a word to me, it's kinda intimidating.. unless it's a scrimmage, or a fun tourney, don't go trying to make friends)
7) know everything about the team you're playing, read scouting reports
8) don't always go for the big hit, the opportunity will present itself in time, if you're trying to lay people out all the time, this isn't the sport for you..
9) practice as hard as you can
10) don't let up until the whistle blows
11) don't be afraid to cover the best attackmen (if you're good and you know u can shut someone down, don't be afraid to seek them out)
12) be an on-field coach, know your defenses, and know when to switch it up
13)

I dont agree that how i got on Varsity my freshman year. Listin if ur on D and trying to get a good rep find the strongest middie or attackmen and have him make friends with the floor. And be quick tho good sticks help and make sure when ur on the field u get really pissed at the smallest of mistakes that u make. This leads to anger anger leads to hate and hate leads to a good *** kicking which is good

what don't you agree with?

lacrosse isn't about big hits I can assure you of that.. and neither is defense.. if you want to be a goon, go for it, but you won't be noticed in a good way

the easiest way to get noticed is to make some big hits. they're attention grabbing, definitely. but after you get noticed you're gonna have to show that you are good enough to be on the field consitently. do this by having no weak hand, not getting beat by your attackman, sliding hard and on time, and communicating.

of course it all depends on the sophistication of the coach too - big hits are attention getting, but if the coach knows the game, they better be productive as well. Of course if your school has the football coach do lacrosse because they don't have anyone else, then by all means tryout like a linebacker and get yourself a spot on the team. I think the best way to get noticed is to take the ball away and move it up field - consistently.

in all my 17 odd years playing, I've seen all sorts of defensive players.. I have played with and agianst some of the best poles and D mids in the world, and I can tell you if you are going to go around laying people out as your main objective, you won't get noticed any further than high school.

some of the best poles I have played against are extremely physical, and will not hesitate to take body, but do it in a controlled manner, and aren't always looking for the big hit.. some of the assets these defenders posess are things like:

exceptional stick skills
defensive awareness (and ability to adjust on the fly)
excellent clearing ability
great team defense (including talking, rotating, sliding, recovering, doubling, etc..)
ability to shut down top attackmen or middies or any offensive player for that matter (ie exceptional one on one abilities in space)
strict position defense mixed with great checking ability
consistent pass intercepting ability
always taking the correct angle when playing defense

Yea i was referring to the fact that "How to get notice" i know u need more than big hits to get passed high school lacrosse. But in High school hits are what keep me motivated. But i forget to mention the control factor one need to make big plays. Like my coach always says Beat em with down with mind and body alike. But being a "goon" does have advantage like mentaly for an attackmen to see a d-man knock out some other on the field make the attack think twice about going to try and take you 1v1 when he could pass the ball and some how some one misses a catch and d-man picks it up and clears it.

I think the best thing in selling yourselves to coach is athleticism and stick skills... I've gotten beat a few times in games, but I make up for it in my ability to clear... If you're outrunning kids and pushing break after break, you're gonna get looks. Stick skills and speed are very important for this.

Most of all the... In my most complete games and where I've gotten the best looks (Top D1), I was doing it all... Playing good d, not necessarily getting the big takeaway check, but making sure that my opposiing attackmen was never able to do what he wanted. Sound position (never getting beat), stick skills, and athleticism will make you a highly sought after recruit

defense is not about hitting. you may have made your florida team by hitting but thats because you werent covering an attackman that would make you miss and fall face first into the groud. defense is about stick work and footwork. positionin is everything. you don't have to take the ball away, just play defense

Hitting when done correctly can be the best feeling in the world. Physical proof that you have dominance over your mark. BUT . . .some of the best defensive players can go a game without getting a stat. If you do your job, you'll prevent things from happening. A lot of big hits are out of desperation, and although they look nice, you and coaches will look at how you almost blew it. That is usually the case, but not always. (sometimes nice things just happen). I am absolutely agreeing with WHEELAX2.
On defense you need to be a force to be recognized, because let's face it, it's easier to score than it is to prevent someone scoring.

yeh but if you cant back that up with all the other stuff... then it wont get you far

get sick on ground balls, transition, position, and youll be good to go

Be loud. Make sure everyone on the field can hear you yelling out your calls. A loud defender intimidates an attackman and he uplifts the entire defense.

yeh but if you suck, and you're loud... you look like an ***

Okay...forget everybody who said "big hits".

Get their attention with your FOOTWORK. Do NOT let your man past you. TALK louder than the goalie! Try to cross the midfield line with the ball around 10 times a game, and NEVER, EVER turn the ball over! Use BOTH hands, and SHOW the coach/recruiters that you are intense, yet absolutely under control.

Also, you need to get more GROUND BALLS than any other player onm the field. One more time...you need to get more GROUND BALLS than any other player on the field.

It's not (at all) about "hitting"...it's about ATHLETICISM. Dpoles should be the best (overall) ATHLETES on the field. THAT will get you where you want to go...

Over this fall i got a chance to play with 3 defense men that were going to Hobart, Virginia, and Navy. All three had absolutley sick stick skills, and thats what made me notice them right away. Another thing, on the field they would never stop talking, and if a goal was scored they would all come together and talk about it and talk about how it could of not happened. Also, they all had fantastic feet. They could move with the top attackmen in the country. Oh and they were all absolute butchers and crazy, that helps.

yea, u need to have good stick skills and know ur slides. being the feild general gets u noticed, u need to talk and be loud. u dont need to strip the attackman, just dont get beat. in college attackmen rarely go 1 on 1 so ur takeaway ability doesnt need to be insane. u need to be able to clear and throw solid passes. but talking is the best, all the coaches who are interested say its because i talk and make sure everyone knows what is going on

to me to be good at deffense and therefore be noticed, is oddly to not be noticed. To never hear your coach call your name out, or your goalie say things to you other than good work. Shut down a star, deny the ball, deny a drive, deny a shot, dont be afraid to take a ball ripped into your chest, never move out the way of a shot, never be afraid, hit when u need to, dont hit when u dont need to, good deffense to me is just when you can completely take a dominant offensive player, and make him look mediocore.

they way to get noticed is to play on a good club team where you have coaches who talk to college coaches for you. thats how i got noticed.

work hard, hit hard, get the ball, and dont let anyone beat you. try to act experienced, or if you are, make sure you definently play showing you are.

i don't play D, but i notice D-men when they hit hard, stick check you untill you wanna punch them barefisted with their helmet on, and they don't talk

I think another way is to accel in drills like 2 on 1 ground ball. Having a good stick got me on to varsity my sophmore year. I don't have very good footwork and my speed is very mediocre. The most noticeable trait to me is definately heart. Coaches can always tell when you're hussling everywhere you go. Even if you are getting killed in a scrimmage, you don't just stop playing. When you consistently do what you're taught, coaches will definately notice.

Defense is not always about that one thing that is like "wow...can't beleive he just did that" yea those all good and well. It is about the little things and the basics. First off YOU MUST HAVE OUTSTANDING FOOTWORK........i good stick is great but can get u in trouble if u dont have the foot work. Also being able to clear the ball is great. Plus it is important to hit the weight room. I say this spairingly because it is not about trying to bench 500000000 lbs..........but the leg strenght which is key to push players off ball. But besides all of that, a good coach will look for off ball communication because that maybe be the most important part. The mental part. I mean u can throw really flashy checks Like Passavia which u will get penelties which will getu noticed in a bad way. Or u can play a more reserved way like Howley which draws less penelties but u dont take away the ball as much. It is all prefernce. This is how I play and this way helped me make the Long Island empire team and get looked at by top tier divison 1 schools. Hopes this helps u and good luck.

what you want to do is find the best guy and guard him. then whenever you go one on one just completely shut him down. if you end up making him cry out of frustration like i did, thats definitely gonna get you looks because the Scouts will be like "Whats the deal with that really good kid?" "Whos guarding him" and then you will be set. I also completely agree with WHEELAX 2 and valax 100 because they are both giving excellent advice.

Being technically sound, talking and play smart will get you noticed by anyone who actually knows the game. Knowing how to defend X, not get players let get topside and riding them out, closing the gate, will have a good coach notice you. Coach Jacobson, second winningest coach in new jersey told me over the summer at a camp that frequently the best defenders go unnoticed to those who dont know the game. Simply because they don't allow their attackman to score or take a clean shot. As a defenseman your objective isn't to get the ball or to not let your opponent to shoot, but to make them take a poor shot. Just think about it, when you first started did you notice the big hitter or guy with the crazy checks who misses the hit or a check and gets beat occasionally, or the fundamentally skilled defenseman who quietly shuts his man down? Then ask yourself, who shut their man down?

Fundamentals, thats all you can say. If you Have sound fundamentals you can be a great d-man.

Good feet one of the biggest keys, just be agile, move with your attackman not after him, if you are getting beat, check your positioning as it compares to your agility ( try to run a little ahead if you are a bit slower or a bit behind if you know that you can catch up).

Sound stick work- you dont need to do crazy dodges up and down the field and make amazing shots but knowing how to lead a man and throw a good pass is essential especially on clears.

Be seen and heard, make sure that your attackman always knows that you are right there, keep a stick on him if you need to, and always call out slides, picks, and cutters, off ball communication is needed- also a good team communication system can get you noticed if it works well and you participate well in it.

Positioning is what i think the main part of defense. Use a basketball like strategy, just make sure your man cant take the easy shots and force him to take the shot from a bad angle or make a bad pass right into the hands of your teammate.

Finally the least important part of defense is definitely hitting, stick checks like the poke, slap and lift are fine but over elaborate checks just mean you got beat or your about to, dont give your man the oppurtunity to score by leting him beat you or get around for that great shot.

If your opponents have low scoring % for the game then your teams defense will get noticed especially if it is consistent. letting up only 1-3 goals a game depending on your opponent is what you should be aiming for. Always take away the easy shots thats all you have to do to be noticed.

Defense is just like the other people said, its better to not be noticed because if you are, you might be making big mistakes.

groundballs, shutting down men, using the v, keeping attackmen from getting anywhere near the crease, last minute checks before they take a shot and not letting anyone take a shot without your shoulder following right through their chest

I play for the Cincinnati Bluejays "A" team on deffense and i start. weve won state a couple times. the thing i do to get noticed on d is during practice make sure you level the crap out of one of the good players.....thats how i got noticed! i leveled out one of the best players on our team and the coach came over to me and said, boy son....you can level out someone like him im sure as hell you can level out anyone else...... i new that i had to do this to get noticed so i had to build myself up to the oppertonity! i worked out at my local work out place or whatever you wanna call it and eventually i became very strong but not like real buff and ****....but then i leveled him.......you can also do other things to make the coaches notice you....especially stand next tot hem when your not in......always get some water for energy...puit your helmet back on and stand next to him.....there are plenty other things you can do but these are two that got me on the strating line up! good luck with gettin noticed!
