Is it possible to custom-color a shaft?
would you just use spraypaint, or is there a special kind of paint for aluminum or titanium?

I've tried it...didn't work.

My method:
Sandblast it
Prime it
Paint it, several coats..

still didn't work

Kryptic I paineted a shaft before you have to clearcoat it and water seal it or it will chip. so you can but I didn't like it lost the feel and get heavy.

there is some way 2 chemically change the color of titanium with coca cola and a battery its in a popular science

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me, but if you're going to do it, I'd say try it on an extra shaft or a cheap on first.

Very good idea. Getting a cheap shaft to experiment on, would be better so you don't destroy the good shaft.

I doubt chemically changing the colour of a shaft would be a better solution than spraypainting it. I don't think chemically treating it would make that much of a difference in colour let alone take alot more time.

Maybe you could rubber coat it just for fun? And Kryptic, when you sandblasted your shaft, did it end up like a Warrior Diamond?

What im trying to get at is that i would like to custom-paint a shaft to match a dyed head, just for a color scheme and a simple pattern. not to change the composition or the material of the shaft.if you did a little science experiment on the shaft lke that then you would change the structural integrity of the shaft.

Wow...that sounded really smart, lol. i hate being smart on a forum, it only works in real life.

Has anyone successfully painted a shaft before, to get back on topic?

no one has ever successfully painted a shaft ive tried it to and it just chips off your best bet is to go buy a new shaft with the holor to match the dyed head either that or dye your head to match the shaft

Yeah bottom line is spray painting just doesn't work very well for very long. If you really want a colour scheme for both your head and shaft than the cheapest solution I can think of is you could buy some tape of the colour you want and put a bunch on your shaft to match the dye job.

You can anodize(sp?) a shaft, just like you can a paintball gun. However you need the proper equipment (acid bath). Too expensive for a little experiment. You could try and contactacting a local shop to see if they would do it for you. otherwise the color will not hold in the metal.

i had the greatest idea about a year ago

i took my F-15+ and sanded all the graphics and rough parts off of it, then, primered it with spray paint, and then i painted it with about 8 coats of that CHAMELEON paint. it worked great, after a few days i screwed a head on it and it was the tightest thing you could have EVER seen in your life. i went to shoot on my friend with it, and he said while he was in the goal, he couldnt concentrate because the shaft kept changing colors in the sunlight. if looking straight down the shaft, it was orange, then as you slowly tipped it it would change from orange to red to purple to green to blue to yellow and then to orange again.
the only problem was that when i played with it, the smallest contact would chip off the paint. so i was thinking if there was any way to keep the paint on the shaft. the only thing i came up with was a serious layer of laquer.

but idk. it was cool while it lasted.

My friend tried to do it once

he sanded
3 light layers of primers
wet sanded
5 really light coats of the color
then a few layers of clear coat stuff, it was like made for cars

It stood up pretty well, but it still chipped when he passed or shot and it got blocked by a D pole or something.

added a few ounces, it felt like

i think they have an article on it on e-lacrosse....they say u can use krylon its a spray paint that sticks 2 plastics and metals but it chips when you get checked

ive hear of people who burn their shafts to add some kind of affect to it, does it really work?

You could just by a harrow if you want it to mach your dye but Harows can be expensive

DONT SPRAYPAINT YOUR GEAR

Spray paint it and get some clear hockey tape. Put it over the shaft and your good.

if you're gonna, try this... sand your shaft, coat it with a primer with flex properties (flex agent. will flex under pressure/heat/cold changes).. then just coat it 2 or 3 times with a paint color of your choice (of course it must have a flex agent in it as well).. then just coat it with a clearcoat with flex agent..

wait nevermind... that would cost a ton to do..!!

it's called anodization
notice all the REALLY nice colored shafts that keep there color?
those are the ones that you doubt
klytes etc
the only problem is it ONLY works on aluminum :whyme:

way wrong i know for sure that you can andonize Ti and id be willing to bet that you can any metal it requires different chemicals and some are much harder to find so its not as comon

Yeah, CSlax has done a few of them. It involves changing the thickness of the oxide layer of titanium, making different colors. Its nice.
