Im lookin at being a goalie, and I was wondering, what is the required goalie gear for high school? Also, do mouthguards work with braces or will I need something special?

What about if I just get a hip protecter thing? Are those aloud, I used one in hockey and it worked wonders! No shin pads or elbow pads needed? SWEET, that could be painful though...

Don't forget a throat guard. You will probably want to invest in a cup. Chances are, you're going to get hit there and it will hurt. Does an 80-mph shot of hard rubber hitting that area sound pleasant to you? I can tell you even as a girl, it hurts when you get hit down there. No shin guards, elbow pads, thigh pads are required but are optional if you want them. If you need to know what you should get equipment wise, search around the site, it'll give you more than enough opinions and information on all the products.

I'm guessing a shot to the baby maker must hurt just as much. Anyway, I think everything has been covered:
1) Helmet with Throat Guard
2) Chest Pads
3) Gloves
4) Cup
5) Mouthguard (I never actually put mine in, otherwise I can't talk.)
6) Stick (duh)
7) SKILLS

After you've got all that you're good to go.

no male goalies i've seen wear shin guards...u should b fine as long as u can get ur stick down there quick enough...if not they u should start trying  but to start out u can probably wear them in practice and get used to the position

I had an opponent goalie (obviously) wear shin pads (under his sweats), and I humiliated him throughout the entire game--calling him out, questioning his masculinity/sexual orientation.

Their team called a timeout, and he took them off.

--It was one of those games you win 19-0, when you play an underdeveloped team.

But for Newby--I suppose you can wear them under your sweats while you adjust to the position. After a couple weeks, though, they need to come off.

Wait, were his shinguards huge or his sweatpants tight?

Either way, bad combination.

Definately get a mouth guard, they're ment to prevent concussions. And if you didn't wear one and have braces, think about ripping your lips to shreads. As mouth guards get more expensive, the better quality they (usually) are. Case in point, invest in one from your dentist. Mine is absolutely awesome.

Trust me I know my orthodontics. Many mouthgaurds do not work with braces, and the best thing to do it find one that does. Go to your dentist or orthdonstist and figured out what can be good. I know of a good one in plaza del lago.

i would also suggest getting some gloves that have some serious padding on the top of the hand. i have g-forces, and play middie, but in the last game some kid ripped it from the top o the box, and i was right between him and the goal, i saw the ball, so i put out my stick, and it nailed the composite stuff on the top, and i didnt feel anything. so definitely get some gloves with some top of the hand padding.

who are you playing for?

So about thigh pads...?

That's less shunned. But personally I still don't use them. I feel that any added equipment restricts my mobility so I try for the bare minimum.

Sometimes I wear sweats though, they're really nice if you find yourself getting hit in the shins alot.

How many coaches will say that you cant use them? And if they do what are the chances that they would let you use them during practice?

I don't know of any coaches that will flat out say you can't use extra padding ever... but I also play women's lacrosse, and I'm required by my coaches to wear extra padding.
Now, I know that if you start out wearing more than the mandated equipment, and your stick skills aren't improving (that is, you're still using your body to do saves instead of your stick), some coaches will make you play without the padding. They'll let you get a few welts and you'll learn very quickly to get your stick down there.

There are gloves tailored to goalies. They're a little more padded (well.. sort of) and have a more protected thumb.

The bruises and welts are good for you.

Spoken like a true goalie.

And I've got to admit.. I kind of like the welts and bruises; they're temporary battle scars. Like, "Well, I didn't get my stick there in time, but I still made the save!"

helmet + throat gaurd, chest protector (with/or without the shoulders) I like without, cup (duh), cleats, goalie gloves, goalie pants (i dont wear em, but they r legal... I tried em for an indoor league a few years back), I actually wore a shin pad on my left shin after i got it broke from a shot during practice... its nasty ill try to get a pic up, but after that month or 2 of messed up ankle i didnt wear one

thigh pads are good for inside and practice. like right now, we are practicing inside a gym and it is very small, the walls are white, and the floor is waxed. makes it very hard to see the ball. thigh pads work wonders for kids that like to hit you in the thighs. other than that, i wouldn't recommend any other pads. not to say wearing then makes u a sally, its just that everyone else thinks you are.

Like I said before--after the first fortnight or so, the "extra pads" need to come off.

And I, as a coach, will NOT let my goalie wear "extra pads" (unless they are WELL concealed by baggy sweat pants)

sfieldlax3r
12-16-2005, 04:42 PM
i dont think its really possible to use "less" pads inside. chest, cup, gloves and helmet are pretty standard, and no one is gonna play without them. chest pad is one thing is rarely ever used...but it would be crazy to play without it

What difference does different types of heads make for goalies, or any position for that matter?

moondog
12-16-2005, 10:28 PM
I really don't think goalie heads make all that much of a difference. As I said, STX Eclipse and Warrior Nemesis are probably the 2 best (Guardian is also good), but the older heads like the classic STX Goalmaster and Warrior Abyss still get the job done.

You can get great deals at laxshopper.com/classifieds, TheLacrosseForums, and ebay

Just make sure you have a good pocket you can catch well and throw well with--that was my main obstacle when I was starting (because nobody had the knowledge to help me out and string a good pocket--I ultimately had to teach MYSELF everything.)

yea, i had the same problem. i taught myself basically all the skills. but as far as sticks, go for a nemesis with 12D or 10D mesh cuz it cushions the saves the most. ive got mine on a krypto pro and it is really good, great control, really light. that and as far as extra equipment on the legs, u dont really need it. i have knee pads because i have surgically repaired knees, but u dont really need anything. just the skillz.

I had a goalie on my lacrosse team that wore them during practice and games and all the field players used to aim for his shins so i would just take the pain.

Make sure you use that extra hard pad under the chest protector - Place it over your sternum area - My daughter was hit with a ball before we knew she needed this extra pad and her heart stopped for about a minute. The paramedics brought her to the hospital and she had a racing heart off and on for about 2 days - It was scary.

If you played football, wear football cleats. If you played soccer wear soccer cleats. Lacrosse cleats are untested, and I have heard bad things about the Warrior Burns.

the warrior burns are amazing there worth the price there super light and amazing comfortable this year im rocking the krypto pro with a guardian 10 diamond and a krypto pro with an eclipse

do any goalies were shin pads?

yeah pussay goalies do a HS goalie should have enough balls to hop in the cage helmet w/throat guard, chest protector, cup, gloves, high level of stupidity to jump in front of 90 mph shots but the glory of making a save is worth any pain. also about the braces shok doctors are good for kids with braces but if your playing goalie your going to need to talk to your defense and talk during the game to direct teh rest of your team so a regular mouth peice is easier to just move to the side of your mouth if you need to say something.

So about thigh pads...?
same thing as the shin pads if your gunna play goalie go all out taking pain gets you more motivated to wanna make the other team lose becasue they gave you pain.

Another option to use instead of shin guards or thigh pads is hockey pants. One of my goalies used to wear them, and they don't restrict mobility too much.

definately get goalie gloves with the extra thumb guard i learned the hard way last year in practice. I took a shot to the thumb and when i took my glove off half my nail was bent back and it was worse pain than gettin hit in thins. i bought goalie gloves the next day so i would def recommend goalie gloves. They make thigh pads for goalies i know warrior and stx make up but they do restrict mobility i tried em as a freshman but i didnt like em. ALso i would definatley where shinguards in practice at the beginning and maybe the first game so u can concentrate on mankin the save and no the pain u will endure after. THats how i learned to take the pain and it work. also maybe have one of you friends us a tennis ball and u dont use a stick and work on makin the saves with only you legs this will help teach you to step towards the ball and keep on you toes as well as gettin you used to gettin hit so u wont be scared
