I was wonderin if anyone elses high schools screw them when it comes to financial support or field time or others. For example my school charges us $500 a month to have the lights on the field turned on before our season starts so since its winter now our captain's practices only last an hour at the most. Also we're charged to use the field during the season even though all of our players attend the school, and we don't even get 50% of the profit from ticket sales. Lacrosse isn't a school sponsored sport yet in oregon and i've heard 80% of the schools need to have a team in order for us to be recognized as a school sport not a club team. Why do we get no respect when we work just as hard as all other sports? This is the fastest growing sport in the US why can't the AD's take a hint?

no offense but the reason oregon doesnt get respect is cuz at this point in time it doesnt deserve respect... but if they learn quickly like texas has and georgia and some southern states they might start to deserve some respect, good to hear they play lax in oregon, new to me.

Even in south florida we dont get respect for lacrosse even tho Lax is the team that wins the most game of all our sports. We are still a club and next year we wont have a team if we can get a exception so i dunno how much better it is out in Oregon.

i play at nease in florida the sport is state sanctioned but the school gives us ZERO support. They don't give us buses, practice fields, jerseys, equipment, no respect, anything else you can name they don't give us. We weren't even going to have varsity letters this year, but since our athletic director is an ex NJ lax guy hes giving us varsity letters. We have to raise every penny ourselves. And almost every sport in our school is sponsored by Nike except the guys/girls lax teams.

Lax is actually growing very fast in Oregon. It's sanctioned in some schools, especially in beaverton and Eugene. Lake Oswego and OES (Oregon Episcopal School) are ranked in the top 50 on the west coast. OES has even produced some D3 players.

I live down in San Antonio, Texas, and I play for the only public school on our district, so we dont get any school support. But the worst part is if we try to change our name (different then our school) they get angry at us and threaten the team. Its a little bogus, but we still have fun playin so its all good

Oregon has had lacrosse for 12 years and has produced a number of legitimate players. There have been at least 2 DI recruits (Halversen to Notre Dame and Dunn to Fairfield) and a number of DIII and DII players, including Alex Richards who was an All-American at Stevens Tech Last year. Also numerous Oregon players have left their mark in the MDIA for prestigious programs like CSU, Arizona and of course the University of Oregon Ducks. Notably, Danny Ernst of Grant HS (not a top program) and U of O, was drafted into the NLL this past year.

I agree that oregon shouldnt be venerated for its lacrosse, but it does its thing in a good way. The game has really been accelerated by the relocation of some great players to the portland area (zulberti, silcott, etc.). Great players can be found in crappy programs and oregonian players are often very self motivated.

thats mind boggling to me. out here we have full access to the 3gyms our school has, each gym has two goals in it, as long as a sport that is in season isnt using it. our lacrosse team is probably one of the most respected teams in school.

we dont even use the practice fields at our school. we ride a bus to the elemenry school about a mile away. our AD hated lacrosse cuz kids were leaving baseball for lacrose. good thing he quit.

i dont understand what he ment...

is he saying that us oregonions dont deserve respect just because we are new to lacrosse? thats like saying that "i dont respect states that are just begining to play lacrosse."

Your school doesn't have to do anything for you, part of getting something from the school is knowing they have a budget. My high school, Verona, WI, didn't give us anything until this past year. We had been consistently the best or second best team in the state for 4 years. Before this past year our captains went to our school board and asked for us to be recognized as a school sanctioned club/sport. They also ALLOWED us to use a football practice field for our practices, and the stadium for games. It's a privelage to get these things not a right.

(edit: We were also not given any sort of funding for practice jerseys, game jerseys, any kind of equipment. Our freshman football team had better jerseys than us.)

my school hates the lacrosse kids... we've been the most succesful team in our school for the last few years (winning our division for the past 3 years) we've only have a varsity highschool team for about 5 yrs and we're yet to see any type of money from the school, and did i mention they hate us... but they have no good reason... i hate my school

my school is exactly the same. its state sanctioned and everything and supposedly the district superindendant says all the lax programs are supposed to get money but we arent getting a penny. we have to raise out own money for jerseys buses refs goals and everything. the only thing the school does is let us play on the school soccer field and enforces the academic policies. i say if you dont support us financially even a little then you shouldnt have the right to kick people off for grades, but i have no say.

i believe that harritonlax misread this and thought that the kid was wondering why oregon gets not respect for lax as a state, which, lets be real here, they dont. but i understand what the post is about and its ridiculous that your school wont pay for your lacrosse...they need to realize that this is the best and fastest growing sport in the country

dude, im from tigard and our school doesn't consider us a sport and it pisses me off. no one at our school takes us laxers seriousely, they say lax is ***** sport and football is better. it's funny though, every time they diss us they always do it from a distance, especially if we have our sticks

AD's tend to think in which sports have the larger potential for the school both in roster and crowd size (winning records can be a different matter but still an all-important factor). In that case the money goes to the longer standing sports and newer ones like lax are shelved because "there isn't enough money."
That's what I and my lax buds were told our first 3 years of High School. Our AD's prime concern was keeping his Basketball team (as well as cheerleading) in new sneakers and training equipment. Baseball & Football in respect to their own seasons were big crowd drawers, especially with 2 large squads per Varsity & JV. Soccer & Field Hockey had enough of a history to keep them on radar, Swimming/Diving as well. Volleyball & Wrestling were the red-headed step children (as a Wrestler we kept having to put off new warmups even though the old ones were in rags b/c cheerleading NEEDED those new sneakers). So where was lax going to fit in?
MoCo, despite being a prime hotbed for lax just wasn't largely concerned outside of the Private School presence and Public School's were lazy to follow. Several schools had established clubs in the early 90s and you could play for any of them since it still wasn't a varsity sport (As an RHSer our main choices were between Wooton & Magruder as none of us would go to cross-town rival Richard Montgomery).
But varsity status hit my Freshman year and we were left high and dry as our AD wouldn't sign waivers to let us go to Wooton. For 3 years we got signed petitions and met with our school's AD & Principal (who was all for the idea) but the AD just kept parroting "There's no budget for it" (And yet Basketball needed away shoes now too!). By my junior year there was hope, talk of a lax coach being hired. My friend Ryan who had headed all our attempts went in for info and came out with grim news: They were hiring a coach, for a girl's team. My senior year we got an AD change and hit paydirt, we had our team, fully funded (though not with the best of equipment) and all, we then went on to steal Baseball's crowd our first year...

The point of my wall o' text. Even in the places lax is huge someone will always stymie the process. I know they're trying to price you guys out so fundraising is in order because it's a steep admission they're giving you. Sure, you will have to cut corners where daylight is concerned but it's a reasonable price to pay if it meens you can avoid necessary fees if you can schedule day games. Oregon looks to have a way to go, and since lax is such a growing sport you may not have to wait long to get the respect you want once you start stealing the crowds of the more established sports. Keep at it.

i know exactly what you mean all the baseball whimps will be dissing me then i open my locker uh oh look a lacrosse stick they all shut up and go to class, saddly our AD got a big head last year because football and baseball did really well but football already failed and baseball better too, he won't even recongize us at all it's pretty sucky but when you walk around the halls and see quite a few kids walking with sticks it should be hard to ignore

Guys, camthrax pretty much said it the deal is we have only been around since '94 and although it is growing fast it isn’t well established in Oregon or on the West Coast for that matter, its still isolated areas of 4a schools that have teams. I played for Glencoe, and we were one of the first two teams established in the state (along with Westlinn) and after having the sport for 12 years at my school we still got no support. We had to play 80% of our home games at evergreen (a weak middle school field) and we have to beg the athletic director and track coaches to let us use the school field for maybe one or 2 games at the end of the season and like we still have to line and sometimes mow our own fields... that’s for one of the oldest programs in the state... just give it time... lacrosse will keep growing... and maybe one day we will just as much respect as the rest of the sports... oh and maybe the changing of the leagues to the 6A, 5A, and 4A system will help lacrosse become an OSAA sport... but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
