GTA has lots of masters leagues that take beginners. Look here:

Once you get the hang of masters, there are probably contacts through one of the leagues to play where you can get hit.

Clarington might be a good bet if you're close. Toronto Masters is another good bet. Other Masters leagues (Whitby, and Brampton for two) are harder for beginners to break into

(my first year in Whitby had me playing with several ex pro, semi-pro, and junior players. They are patient and helpful, but it's probably a good idea to do a year in a lower-level league first).

There's a great "light contact" (stick checking) adult rec league in Scarborough (Toronto Lightning Lacrosse (http://www.torontomasterslacrosse.com) ).

It's a nice mix of accomplished players, moderately talented players, and total hacks. The league commish often runs informal pick-up ball on Sundays ($10 for a 1/2 hour of drills and 1 hour of scrimmage), so that'd be a good place to try playing for a first time.
