I searched, and the only thread on lacrosse "lingo" a)was in the women's forum and b)hardly included any terms, just sub-cultural stuff...
ANYHOO--I just thought it'd help some new players to post some of your favorite terms/slang that are (somewhat) exclusive to lacrosse, so the new(er) players have half a clue what people on this forum are talking about.
--I'll start with a couple easy ones...

1)"Yard sale"--a nasty stick check that dislodges the ball, along with the stick, from the opposing player, who must (humbly) pick up his/her stick before playing the ball/person.

2)"Coma slide"--a slide (usually cross-crease) from a couple passes away, that could potentially lead to a huge body check.

3)"Swiss Cheese"--a cold goalie who seems to be letting in a lot of goals, and is not making many saves.

4)"Tennis Racket"--a stick with an incredibly shallow pocket, that is difficult to catch/cradle/dodge with.

5)"fogo"--a player whose role is to win faceoffs. Face off/get off.

6)"Windshield Wiper(s)"--when a close defender waves his longpole from the front to the back of an offender, similar to the action of a windshield wiper.

7)"Elevator"--a low-to-high shot, when the player dips his stick below his waist or knees, then yanks a shot to the top shelf (see Jesse Hubbard)

8)"Worm-burner"--a sidearm or underhand shot that barely skims the ground, usually with good velocity.

9)"Tic-tac-toe"--a close-range goal scored off a diagonal pass to the backside, while the ball is being rotated by the middies.

10)"Rope"--coined by Leif Elsmo ("He's got rope!") a slang term for a goal, usually from a time-and-space shot, possibly to the corner.

11)"Pizza in the oven"--when a player holds his stick out in front of his body while running, after a dodge, to prevent a trail check.

12)"Hanger"--a player who leaves his stick exposed after a dodge, making for an easy check by the defender.

13)"Hack"--a low-skilled player, whose fundamentals might not be great, who just goes out for the "big hit," or spends most of his time recklessly swinging his stick, looking for home run checks.

14)"Twig"--Lacrosse Stick

15)"Pill"--Ball

16)"Pup"--Young gun

17) "Pipe!" - anytime ball carrier is on or passes GLE

18) "Slide" - bring an extra man to the ball carrier

19) "Clear" - iv'e got the ball- break to open space

20) "Ball down" - any time the ball is on the ground

21) "heres your help" behind the goal or when breaking to open space to help clear

22) "Who's hot?" "Who's got his 2?" - who is going to slide? who has 2nd slide?

23) "Check!!!" check sticks there is a dangerous feed coming into the hole

24) "Who is in the hole???" don't you hate it when your defender goes out 25 yards after a ground ball and leaves his attacker camped out in front of the goal?

25) "Close the gate" or "Turn him" - force attacker behind the goal to do inside roll

26) "Sag in" - you must be new to lacrosse because we don't cover guys above the restrainer

27) "Gilman!!!!!!" the other team has resolved to throw the ball as far as they can (a Gilman Clear). D-poles need to be tight on their attackers. It still amazes me after 15 years to see defensemen not ready for this.

28) "You're island" - no one is in position to give help on a slide - hold him!

29) "Cutter" offensive player crashing to net looking for a feed

30) "Man coming in" - other team has a man coming in from the sub box

31) "Number up" - find your man

32) "Sticks up" - (man down esp.) cover the passing lanes with sticks up in the air

33) "rotate" - when in a rotation (man down defense) and they don't know what the hell they're doing, you may have to tell them to do this

34) "get on his hands" - check his hands, he can't throw or dodge without them

35) "Lift!" - as you are trailing behind a shooter get a stick under his arm and lift to disrupt his shooting motion

36) "Shift (left, right)" - you are out of position, move a bit
