Rap--Deltron

I'd consider Ween a little-known band, and they defy genres--they can do anything and pull it off. Some punk, some pop, some country, some international. I suppose I'd call it parody-music. But they are seriously good. One of those bands where "everybody will like a handful of their songs, no matter who you are"

Santa Cruz Hemp All-Stars--improvisational/jam music. 2 members of STS9, and some guys from Disco Biscuits, and some other bands come together for this group. No songs--all they do is improvise, and it sounds freaking amazing. Drummer and horn player are phenomenal.

I've been on a post-rock kick so:

Mogwai
Explosions in the Sky
Mono

are all good bands to look into, Mogwai is brilliant.

Frndlefire knows what he's talking about ... Check out www.temporaryresidence.com which is the label for Mono, Explosions in the Sky (as Frndlefire mentioned), and others like Nice Nice, Eluvium, and Tarentel.

Also, Godspeed You Black Emperor is amazing, comparable to Explosions in the Sky ... more experimental stuff includes Squarepusher and Autechre.

My Bloody Valentine is sick, and Sonic Youth is the revolutionary band that brought underground alternative to the mainstream ...

Any of the mentioned bands are definitely worth a look.

I like what you have to say. GSY!BE is amazing, and that post-rock stuff is killer when you're in the mood for it. Count Sigur Ros among them too.

My Bloody Valentine is sweet, and I've been listening to Daydream Nation from Sonic Youth recently. Got Loveless fairly recently as well.

Um, recently for me I've been abusing my stereo with The Walkmen, Wolf Parade, Sufjan Stevens and um, The Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. Also The Shins. If you check out those bands/artists, you'll be happy. Bro.

Ween is so awesome I cant even stand it.

He Is Legend
-The Seduction
-Either they Decorated for Christmas Early or they're all Dead
-Eating a Book

He Is Legend is really cool. I've been listening to them a lot lately, I dont really know how to describe them. They just play.

As I Lay Dying and Unearth are the friggin bossest metal bands out right now. Around here they're pretty popular, I'm sure a few of you guys know who they are.

-Native Boston, MA band.
-3 albums out, their most recent being "Drawn to Revolving Doors"
-"For Better or Worse", and "When You Gracefully Creep In" are two of their more popular songs.
-They're a rock-pop'ish band, so there stuff isn't extremely deep or original...but, the songs are all well written, good instrumentals, and they're plain out catchy. I myself am often a music snob, but I do admit that these guys are legit.
-They were rated as Boston's most promising local band in several newspapers.

These are just a few great "underground" bands:
Of Montreal- their own (in other words, no one knows)
Cursive- alternative & punk
Iron & Wine- indie
pedro the lion- indie
Bright eyes- indie
The Fiery Furnaces- alternative or otherwise
Flaming Lips- I have no clue
Red light school district- rock, local band opened for the killers many times

FallIntoIt
12-24-2005, 02:43 PM
I wouldn't consider Of Montreal to be alt rock, more like synthpop. Along the same lines of Peachcake.

You want a great band to listen to, check the Format. I don't know if they're big around the country, but they're huge in Arizona (local boys, y'know). Also a local band in AZ that I adore, Army of Robots. Sounds like a ska name, but they're kind of alt rock, for extreme lack of a better genre-label

Dan
12-24-2005, 03:00 PM
I'd put Fiery Furnaces in the Hyperprog category. Crazy stuff. Still don't like Blueberry Boat, but I'm working on it. Listened to it like 8 times. Um, My brother just brought home Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! so I'm getting that today, and some other sizzick stuff. Wilco, they're good.

If I heard CYSHY! at my radio station, I'd be psyched. They play crap. I hate my radio station. So I don't listen to it at all. Also just got Deerhoof's Milk Man, and it's purty good. I recommend at least the first 3 songs, because that's all I've listened to since I got it late last night. Um, RJD2 is really good. Way to go hip-hop. Same with DJ Shadow. RJD2 wishes he was as good as DJ Shadow.

That's funny you said Deerhoof, because that's another band on our playlist I dislike.

As a side note - I work at my college campus radio station. If it's obscure, we play it.

I must say, I've gotten quite attached to Ladytron and Sigur Ros, especially "Hoppipolla" by Sigur Ros. And Wolf Parade and the Exit are new on my list.

I've known about Sigur Ros for like, a while. College radio stations? Yes, I can imagine them abusing the new indie kings. Luckily, I have to work to hear anything new. I'm not spoiled with it. I've got 3 Sigur Ros albums, and Agaetis Byrjun, Staralfur, Hoppipolla, Gong, Untitled #7 and 8, Olsen Olsen and Vilvar Vil Til Loftarosa are my favorites. There's a kid a street over that's living here for a year from Iceland. He's seen several Sigur Ros shows and stuff. Yet, the kid is a HUGE Interpol fan. He's cool. I like Interpol. You know what one of my favorite albums is, everybody? The Walkmen - Bows + Arrows. For realz, kids. So good. And Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People. See, Fallintoit, I'd have expected that BSS and Wolf Parade, with all of their massive hype, would have been played a lot more on a college radio station than Deerhoof, which is pretty new to me.

Yeah, they're (Sigur Ros) pretty known amongst the indie kids, but still underground enough to be considered 'little known'.

As for Broken Social Scene ("Anthems For a Seventeen Year Old Girl" off of You Forgot It In People is my favorite song) and Wolf Parade, they're regular fixtures in our playlists, but not so much that it's overwhelming. Deerhoof, however... ungh. And we don't play certain bands completely according to hype - how else would other music get out? Not to mention, it's at the discretion of the music director, who seems to be on a Deerhoof and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah! kick... and fond of throwing an ungodly number of Radiohead songs in the playlist. If we played according to hype, we'd be playing a lot more ****ing Death Cab.

As an aside - we've got a couple songs from the latest BSS album in heavy rotation right now. I'm still working on getting "Handjobs for The Holidays" added... not so much because I really like the song or anything, but mostly because I'm itching to say that name on air.

Yes, some's got my back. Temporary Residence is solid, everyone should listen to Mono. I agree with Godspeed, incredible, but I never really got into squarepusher. Kinda just hover around Mogwai a lot.

And I really wouldn't consider Sigur Ros unknown...I've heard them on the radio. Sure, they aren't Radiohead...but I feel like they only dabble in the post-rock genre whereas someone like Mogwai or Slint are a little more the definition.

Sure, Sigur Ros aren't unknown, but other than post-rock, I guess you could call them atmospheric rock or something. Sort of an offshoot of parts of Radiohead's all-encompassing style. Fallintoit, I'm a major Radiohead fan, so a station that plays them all the time would probably be cool. Handjobs for the Holidays, that's just an amusing name, I know. But wrong hype. I don't mean Rolling Stone or Spin or anything that's really on magazines, I mean the indie hypers, like Pitchfork, Stylus, Tinymixtapes, Popmatters, all the blogs, all that kind of stuff. Most of those places could care less about Death Cab; they were there for The Arcade Fire and all that other stuff in 2004, and this year BSS, Wolf Parade, Kanye West up and down the board everywhere, CLHSY! and New Pornographers, really. Sometimes I buy into the hype. It was worth it for Wolf Parade, though.

spartacus9

Yah, Wolf Parade put out a great album this year. I think I'll go listen right now.

FallIntoIt
12-28-2005, 05:14 PM
I wasn't referring to hype from the indie kids, but from the listeners. The masses. The bourgeois, if you will. Since that's the business of a radio station, even if they're all for introducing said masses to great unknown bands, the listeners must be drawn in with bands and musicians they already know and have heard the hype over.

spartacus9
12-28-2005, 05:22 PM
Another good band is Ozma. I saw them open for Weezer one time. Theyre amazing. Theyre under kung fu records. Kung Fu has had some pretty good bands over the past few years so expect good things from Ozma and Kung Fu's other bands.

Dan
12-28-2005, 05:43 PM
Ah. I see. I thought you meant the hype from publications and websites and stuff. Yes, Death Cab is driving me crazy too. My friends are all like, "Ooh, Plans!" and I'm like, "Ooh, I just got nearly 100 Pavement songs!" and their like, "Pavement? What?" Urgh. Pavement's not even that unknown. Heck, Stephen Malkmus put out a good album this year. Pavement was pretty much 3 guys playing what Stephen Malkmus wanted to, if you ask me. The stuff has barely changed.

spartacus9
12-28-2005, 06:47 PM
I agree. For those of you who dont know, Pavement is kind of like Mogwai meets Ben Kweller meets Nada Surf.

Dan - I like your taste man, it's hard to find people who like good music with all the crap out there these days. Anyway - some others I just thought of include The Stone Roses, Portishead, Dinosaur Jr, Elliot Smith, and Sea and Cake. Elliot Smith is great stuff - not all that unknown but definitely under appreciated. He did a lot of work for the soundtrack of Good Will Hunting (absolutely amazing movie), so if you liked the music that played when Will and Skyler were in bed together, and the last scene when he's driving away, then you like Elliot.

Some of my favorite local (NC) bands are Jump, Little Children (hilarious) , Dave LaMotte (absoloutely amazing on gutair) and Tamasha (the lead singer is one of my substitute teachers).
I have a lot of friends who are obsessed with Dispatch.

- DRAGONFORCE!!!; Best underground power metal band out there. (Fury of the storm http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=7326510)

And for the love of christ PORCUPINE TREE.

I've been listening to both of those lately, oddly enough.

Elliot Smith is great stuff - not all that unknown but definitely under appreciated.

He also committed suicide a couple years ago. But I agree, lovely.

Yeah, he sorta started emo, didn't he? At least a style of it, supposedly. Still haven't listened to much. Mainly "Speed Trials" off of Figure 8 or whatever. Dinosaur Jr., that's old stuff. The one song I've heard is called Budge. And I know they're good. I'm thinking about getting into Can and Velvet Underground just for kicks. THEN I'll be the best music geek in school. Beat my indie from 2+ decades ago, hosers! I'm thinkin that old British stuff is good. Not as old as The Beatles. I'm talking like, when Sonic Youth and The Pixies were in their prime. Like My Bloody Valentine, even though they're totally not from Britain at all. Like Scotland or something.

I don't really listen to emo, but I would have to think that Elliott would be pre-emo...just time period wise. It seems to me that emo has only really come into prominance recently (yes, even though punk has been around for a long time). I think a lot of times he just gets written off as making depressing music for depressed people (because of the suicide, drugs, alcohol, etc.) and I'm not saying he wasn't a mess, but as a songwriter I place him very high. It seems like during our parents generation songwriters were lauded much more than they are now and I see Elliott as one of the few prominant songwriters of our time.

I agree. I wouldn't call Elliot Smith emo, just pre-emo, but um, I said that wrong? Anyway, today, I listened to The Shins for like 1.5 hours, and then some other stuff. My sister is watching a TV show about a little boy with a giant tumor on his face. He's really gross looking.
