I found a website that calculates how many words you read per minute. I was wondering how fast you TLFers read. I got 291 words per minute. I'm a pretty slow reader, but the website says 200 is average.

I got just over 400, but if I speed reader I can go much faster than that with a little drop in comprehension. I still understand what I'm reading, but I probably wouldn't be able to tell you what it said verbatim

I got 821 wpm and a 91% comprehension score (10/11). The sprinter question threw me because I didn't remember a number for it. I went back and read it to find the answer walking speed. :banghead:

Well I scored 1281 which really is no surprise to me. I have been reading for what seems my whole life. I also am blessed by good genetics with near-total recall which makes me reading easy as all can be. I am a natural speed reader, but I do agree that the more one reads the better they will do.

1204 wpm, 82% comp (9/11)

I read for fun and will juggle up to 3 books at once so I am not surprised, I actually thought I'd have a slower wpm.

Ya, were you guys with the 100+ reading scores speed reading, or reading normally. Directions stated read at normal speed and that's also what I thought the submitter was asking for.

To all that say over 1000 words per minute I congratulate you on your bs. 1000 words per minute means you read the entire thing in 36 seconds. You are also in the top 1% of readers which most of you are not in.

Your entitled to your opinion. I thought it was bs at first but I redid it several times at what I thought was my normal speed. Over the years normal for me has become faster than others, but like I said, I read for recreation so I've had a lot of practice.

My original score was me reading as fast as possible. When I took the test over reading at my normal reading speed I scored 1183.

I agree with you completely roycegracie47. So what if some of us read faster than others? It is not a competition, but there will always be detractors out there who refuse to accept that anyone is better than them at anything and fall into the classic defense mechanism combination of denial/projection.

Seriously people you have me lolling in my seat in beautiful NC where its in the 60s in mid January.

If they/you are lying about this, that is just about the most petty thing I've ever wanted to encounter (lying about your reading speed... I can hear the ladies clamoring over that from a distance). So everyone chill. No one cares, and if you do care, stop.

Go Panthers.

well, now i know how much i suck. lol. i got 187 wpm the first time with 67 percent comp. and 234 wpm the second time with 100 percent comp. which surprises me because i am in advanced placement classes for pretty much everything, especially language arts. in a way, i agree with franks, because over 1000 wpm seems like some crazy bs. even over 400 seems like some crazy bs to me. but hey, maybe i am just a super slow reader. i did it a third time, reading barely fast enough to actually make sense of the words passing my eyes, and i got 380 wpm.

Some people can read very fast, and I happen to be a very quick reader (with an okay comprehension).

Back in the day when I was reading daily I could pull down a 1,000+ page book in a day if I set my mind to speed. Othertimes I would want to soak in every detail (With Fire And Sword by Henryk Sienkiewicz, Author of Quo Vadis) and it would take me 2 months to finish a different 1,000 page book.

I think everyone needs to chill, especially the people who are pointing the fingers "calling people out" let them do their e-chest beating. Its not even trolling or flaming so why does it bother you? Until it hurts someone I don't care who lies about what.

edit - 730 screen so ~1000 paper.
91% comprehension, although I made educated guesses on several of them.

Now stop whining, and if you your post is not contributing I will report you to the FBI as flaming is now illegal.

i got 196 WPM... im a pretty slow reader... it has haunted me my whole life.

I'm going to make a hypothesis as to why that is -- and I hope you don't find this demeaning.

I believe a few years before I was born (1988) during the early 1980's, which since you are in college, was probably the era you were born in, the teaching of reading skills to an experimental and unfortunately, wrong turn.

I'm going to assume you went to public school GA, again if I'm wrong feel free to correct me.

The Reading curriculum in the US for generations focused heavily on Phonics -- for those of you who may have forgotten what phonics is, seeing as how most people here are older teenagers, phonics is the teaching of sounds and how to blend them together to form words -- you read the letters, connect them to sounds, and then mentally connect the word to those blends of sounds you just read. You know when you ask a little kid to read a book to you and the sentence is "The boy went to the market" and he reads it as "T-Huh b-oi wen-T" etc etc chopping the words accents and all -- well that is because he is learning phonics and is reading the word and blending the sounds of the letters to formulate the word.

Now, during the '80's and even into the '90's -- the new trend was to abandon phonics in public schools. Nobody really had an answer as to why phonics seemed useless all of a sudden, but teachers tried new ways of teaching reading, such as memorizing the way words look, and just saying them -- which in the English language can have disasterous consequences.

Needless to say, reading scores plummeted and it was suddenly the GOAL, not the current standard, but the GOAL for Mr. Clinton, that every 6th grader could go into Middle School reading at a THIRD grade level because this new way of teaching reading was on the way out after seeing how useless it really was. He realized that the education system was in shambles and that an uneducated society is headed towards a lifetime of lethargy. But I digress.

For those of you a little older, and around my age (17-18) you probably remember a little thing called "Hooked on Phonics". Don't you wonder why you never see commercials for Hooked on Phonics anymore? Because During the time when this reading tool was selling very well was when Phonics was not being taught in schools, and kids were going into high school with terrible reading levels. It isn't around anymore because Phonics has thankfully made it's way back into the education system.

Now I'm not saying you have a terrible reading level GA, and I'm not even directing this statement at you personally, but if any of you have ever wondered why your reading levels are low, try to remember when, and how you were taught to read; and if you are about 18-20 years old, I'll bet you you weren't fully instructed in the Phoenetic technique of learning how to read. I'm not blaming that on you, you just grew up in a bad educational system.

And not to turn this into a politically biased statement, education is probably the most important weapon people have against oppression and injustice, so when it is devalued by the government, that is a very dangerous decision.

I did about 412 words per minute, but I read A LOT, I mean I get new books all the time, 'cause I read the ones I have so many times I get bored with them. Harry Potter for example. I was impressed with myself.

I was born in 85, and went to public school. Its all about how much you read outside of school.

I used tobe a reading fiend. Back in my younger years (like 6-8 years old) I would read those 3 dollar "novelizations" of The Last Mohican, various Jules Verne novels, etc. Like they were crack. I then moved on to better things of course, but the reason I read so fast and other people who read fast is practice practice practice.

BT, the GA education isnt it at all... i actually spent half my schooling in md. i was in the magnet program in elementary school. And when i moved to ga in middle school, i was put in PROBE, which is basically the middle school magnet program... and the high school i went to is one of the best public schools in ga... we had the highest SAT's in the state every year... public or private. It's just that, going through the magnet program, we were taught that comprehehnsion is so much more important than speed. because of this i can read a piece at half the speed of others, but comprehend it so much better. so, in retrospect, i can read a piece once at a slower rate and understand it, whereas others have to read it 2 or 3 times to completely comprehend it.

Enjoi is right in showing that practice does improve your reading. . .

And I was just making a generalization, not talking specifically to you.

But some people don't have books to practice with which is why the educational system of this country needs an over haul.

i do agree with you in that the educational system in this country needs an overhaul. to be honest with you... having a college degree does not show that you really know anything, but rather you knew how to work the system and get passing grades... i know some people who have multiple degrees and are complete idiots.
