i have a bad knee and i always use icy hot patches for games. but in your opinion what works best out of the icy hot knee sleeve, the cremes, or the patch. i cant try all them since they are so expensive it be a waste.

icy hot does nothing for an injury infact it actually can make things worse...it sends a messgae to your brain that ur injury is fine when it it really isnt...all it does in numb the pain for a a little bit ...the best thing to do is ice...just ice as much as possible...i take athletic tranining and this is what we have been taught...ask any trainer around and they will tell you ice as much as possbile.

Why cheat using a icy hot patch, I use a good old knee brace.

I do too, but it can't hurt to use the icy hot patch in moderation. Can it?

no it does not, the way icy hot works is that the menthol causes the skin to feel cool (through evaporation i think) so your body reacts by sending increased bloodflow to the area. The increased bloodflow and the heat brought to the area loosens up the muscles and helps them heal faster. it is the same idea as using a heating pad, I don't think there is any possible way for icy-hot to hurt you, execpt putting it in your eyes, and possibly eating it. You should probably try and heat your knees before you play and practice and streach your legs then ice them immediatly after you are finished. Also depending on the injury weight training to increase the strength of your legs may help them feel better in the long run.

yes but it makes the pain nulled enough that you can go hard again but what if you hurt it again well you just ruinined the area that injured. Icy Hot is bad jsut used ice and a heating pad

first off you mean numbed, not nulled, and I really dont think the bit of weak topical pain reliever is going to make a difference, it is like saying dont take any asprine. Second what I am telling you is that icy hot is effectively the same as a heating pad, therefore suggesting that icyhot is bad and a heating pad is good makes no sense what so ever. Not to mention if you read the original post he says "I have a bad knee" I assume from the wording that this is not something that will get better, and he is going to play anyway, he might as well feel as good as possible.

nulled. It isnt numb he can still feel his knee. And a heating is real heat icy hot is chemical and is too quick of a change form the cold not good. period ask a trainer

^ This guy's a house. And he actually knows what he's talking about. Icy hot is just an analgesic, like bio-freeze and other menthol products. Use it in moderation, but it doesnt "fool" your knee into thinking its better if it's really not.

so basically what everyone is saying is that when u use icy hot, u cant feel your injury as much, so u work even harder and are unknowingly injuring it farther (since u cant feel anytihng), ive used it before when i absolutley needed to play but yeah, i wouldnt recomend it too much cuz it could do more harm than good

there's a reason players warm up in sweatpants, to help heat their bodys up so they can stretch better.

i assume you are referring to the fact that I suggested icing immediatly after streaching. I think that most trainers will tell you that is a good idea, playing will most likely cause some inflamation of the area around the injury, and icing will keep it down. An example of this is right after most MLB pitchers finish pitching the go straight to the bench and put a bag of ice on their shoulder. If it were bad for them their trainers would not tell them to do that. Look I think we can all agree if it is a serious injury he should probably not play rather than risking aggravating it further. But from my understanding he has chronic knee pain, that may or may not ever get better, but simply resting it is not the answer. In this case I think that if Icy hot works for him there is no harm in using it. It is not like he won't notice if he injures himself more, and suggesting otherwise is akin to suggesting not using asprin before hammering because you may not notice if you are hammering your fingers.
As far as which product to choose, I believe they all have the same active ingredient, the pads are probably more convient, but they probably also cost more and produce more waste.
Shifty - I am sending you a PM about this spring.

well in my case it is impossible for me to injure my knee even more so icy hot wouldnt be a problem. and i talked to my orthopedic surgeron.

i cant stand these icy hots, cause my a trainer at our school told me to use one in 2 different occasions once for my knee another time for my elbow, & i can't get the dang things to stay on...i stick w/ regular braces now, cause the icy hots odnt even seem to help much to me & they never stay on right

When i injured my knee... what i did was use an icy hot sleeve, wrap it, then put one of those ace knee braces on.. worked great!
