Point of a saddle

i seached a little, maybe not as much as i should have but whats the point of a saddle on a rocket-pocket and other custom stringjobs?

To hold the leathers a certain distance apart, and to create a resting place for the ball during vertical cradles....also it looks pretty cool.

Correct me if i'm wrong.
