I've been playing lax for a while now and i still dont know what the means...... i had a really bad "hook" in my stick and the ball would go dtraight down or stay in my stick if i followed through on my shots......i have been told that "whip" is that same as a "hook" but im not sure.......i dident like to play with the big hook my stick had but i learned to shoot with it

Welcome to the game. Here's a good glossary which should help explain a number of lacrosse terms, including whip:

Then, do a search on this forum for more in-depth discussion about it. There are many threads that talk about it.

whip is when the ball hooks on the shooting strings(the ones strung across the mesh). Whip is all a matter of preference, some players play with tons of whip and others polay with none. Most will play with la little to no whip so they don't overthrow their target. Whip can be achieved my having softer mesh, larger mesh diamonds, tightr shooting strings and an inverted U shaped shooting string. You'll know if you have whip if you passes go lower than you want them to. If they go higher than you want them to you need more whip. hope that helps

Welcome to the forums. You will find many threads on this if you search. Basically, whip makes the ball go at a steeper angle when thrown. It gives you more power but you need a pretty big windup.

Whip is when the ball hits the shooting strings and makes it go down on a shot. There are different kinds of whip. There is where the ball just seems to hook out of the pocket, there is where the ball hits the scoop, and I prefer a little bit of whip where the ball just kind of naturally goes at a slight downward angle.

just so you know some people like whip so they can do underhand shots or they dont want a qiock release its all opinion, attack men tend to have a low pocket that results in low whip usaually, midfielders usually have a mid/ high pocket that allows them to do underhand shots or just different shooting ways.

Thanks for all the help. As long as he's throwing straight, I guess I won't worry about 'whip' right now. Thanks again guys, great site.

that is EXACTLY what whip is.

You said he was throwing strait, so I wouldn't play with anything until he starts throwing bad a lot. Even then, it may just be that he changed how he's throwing and just needs help getting the form back.

If your son is young, he should probobly start with little whip because it is easier to throw with and will help develop stick skills. Basically, the easiest way to have little whip is to have a shallow pocket. Most factory string jobs are shallow so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. As your son learns the game and develops different skills, he may want to try different amounts of depth and/or whip.
