The Womens Professional Lacrosse Association has a website up trying to get a league started. Is there enough interest out there for a successful pro league ? the website is www.freewebs.com/womenslacrosseleague/index.htm

Wow! That is sooo exciting. It's going to be tough to make it successful ..(the WUSA and WNBA..WUSA only lasted a couple years..WNBA doesn't get a lot of attention)

Not to be pessimistic though, because I would absolutely lovee to watch pro wlax. It's just going to be tough..

but..I doubt that there will be any team in socal..or even on the west coast

There is a chance there could be:

Have you ever wanted to have your own proffessional sports franchise?Well, heres your chance! We are set to start late spring of 2006. This is a national league therefore you can put your team anywhere in the United States. We are only looking for quality ownership, if you are not serious about owning a team please do not waste are time.

The owner of the frachise gets to pick where they want the team to be.

I don't mean to be negative and a jerk, but this is as likely to happen as me winning the lottery. I really don't see this being successful and taking off. I'd be surprised if they even get the venture off the ground and prelims started with teams actually materializing.

I have to agree with CT. The WNBA is only around because they are supported by teams in the NBA,if not for that they would not be around. WUSA only lasted a couple of years. Both of those sports are more popular than lax. I would like to see it work but I really don't see it happening.

hey, look at the lpga (womens golf, hope its abbreviated right), thats a real boring pro sport (no offence), and look how popular that is, they show it on channels like CBS, NBC, ect. they started up in 1944 (when no one took womens sports serious) and really got some attention by 1948. If the womens pro lax league can get some real good paying sponsors like maybe nike (since they already sponsor most other sports) they may have a good chance. i would love to watch and maybe play in a womens pro league one day, who wouldnt.

Thats like a dream come true for any girl, I know I would LOVE to play pro lax and if it thrives it has the potential to really grow like the mens has.

but you can say the same for wsoccer, they were riding a lot of popularity from the cup and olympics and it still failed...plus they had a lot more exposure than lax....pro wlax may work strictly on the east coast....even the nll team here folded.....

hey well lax is the fastest growing sport in the world, we might have a chance over here on the East coast, considering how popular it is. we need more positive thinking on this thread :agree: . this can and will happen.you can quote me on that a few years from now.

here in the midwest guys lacrosse does well as a hs sport....they get a lot of people in the stands....whereas girls lax gets family members, friends, boyfriends...etc....btw i play field hockey too and you can hear the crickets chirp...

maybe we need to play the guys version...okay that's another tread....

not to spoil this but I really don't see it working, people barely even go to Women's NCAA games, look at picks of the world cup there weren't enough people in the stands to fill up one section of Navy Marine Corps stadium, I myself think it will fail

Yea, i think it's good to have a pro women's team. They will get more exposure to the public and there will be something to look foward to after college lax.

I doubt this will ever happen. Sure, it would be sweetass if it did, but considering men's pro lacrosse is still a risky market to get into due to the small (albeit, dedicated) fan base, women's pro lacrosse is likely to be seen as too risky of a gamble to investors.
And let's assume by some statistical miracle that a group of investors do back this, and that there gets to be enough for a few teams, nobody will go. Not enough for the turnover to even break even, much less turn a profit. People go out and see high school girl's games and decide it sucks, then never want to see a woman's game again, especially if it involves paying to get in and "suffer".
Aside from the already existing idea that women's lacrosse is a boring spectator sport (to which I say, "How in hell can you watch baseball or golf, then?"), women's sports are historically prejudiced against because it's women playing. It's sexist, I know. But I suppose it's better than the other prejudice (that being "Women athletes = lesbians", leading to a homophobic reason for not going to games).

Anyway, it sucks, I know. I would love to see a professional women's league. But I'd also love to pull a 4.0 this semester in all of my classes, but I just don't see either happening.

Me too,I totally believe that womens pro lax has a chance to be big, and yea the east coast is probably gonna be a hotbed, OSU (Ohio State) and OU (Ohio University) girls are AMAZING, I think it'll thrive. But it's just not Ohio I know. And you can quote me too. :agree: lol.

Well, of course we're all rooting for it, but the likelihood of it happening is just so small. Seriously, who wants to watch a bunch of women play lacrosse? It's depressing, to a point, but it's the sad facts.

^ I agree, it has the oppertunity to grow and I bet that it will. The sport is growing so I think the prospect of a pro women's team is well overdue. I can't wait to see how this goes in the future. Its exciting.

I think if they start small it wouldn't be so bad. Maybe four teams for each region of the country? A smaller season so less practice time, etc. Obviously try and keep expenses low.

im guessing they dont have pr reps set up yet, or they are working on a marketing campaign. The first time you see/ hear about something it leaves a long lasting impression, so im sure their working really hard on ad campaigns, ect currently. or they might just be more focused on funding and compiling teams first.

FallIntoIt
04-25-2006, 08:59 PM
Then they're going to need one amazing ad campaign.

I really think you're all getting your hopes up too high. The MLL and NLL are barely afloat currently, and with the current Duke situation, I don't think professional lacrosse of any sort will survive just yet. The men's leagues need to become a lot more stable before anyone takes a foray into the women's market. So... don't expect too much.

yess a women's pro league! Finally there's something to look forward too! It'll be really hard to get it off the ground granted because you look at leagues like the WNBA...but than look at Women's tennis, in my opinion more people watch womens tennis than mens tennis. I think that tennis should be the model for Women's pro Lax. I'm pumpeddd!
Is there one in Virginia?!!? Please we need pro something in Virginia...particularily in Charlottesville?!!?

what bull. freaking d9000 is clearly the guy who made that website...and who would buy something like a team or a share in a franchise on ebay? scam anyone?

this is not how these things are started, don't believe it until you hear about it from someone credible.

i want to play pro as much as anyone...but pro sports only happen if they can make money. i'm doubting this will happen anytime soon if at all, but only time will tell.
