I have read up on a jump rope thread someone started recetnly and i went onto modells to look into it, because i can't seem to find my rope. Anyway, on the part where it says they also bought this, it had 5 and 10 pound ankle weights. I was wondering if maybe this would help increase the effiency if when you jump rope you attach a 5 or 10 weight. Just wondering on personal opinions or experiences (prefer experiences but if you think its a good or bad idea then please have a reason.)

Ideally it should be good, but you might want to ease into it. You should atleast have a regular rutine (sp?) before you start to add some weight to it. It would definately help to improve any calf strength/definition that you may be deficient in.

ya, i dont know if you ever tried jumping rope as an actual exercise but it does A LOT more then most people think....for example, jumping rope after the first minute or so you can feel a big burn in your calfs....doing jump rope w/ ankle weight is ridiculous...that would be so hard.....it sounds fun....ive got something to strive to

I like the responses im getting, but yeah im not going to be doing anything with weights until i can jump for about 4 or 5 minutes at a pretty fast pace. Right now i can do like 3, so ill start with weights in a little bit.

If you are able to then start of low with weight and work your way up.
Don't just Jump into heavy weight.
Week 1 No Weight
Week 2-4 2.5lbs on each ankle
Week 5-7 5lbs on each ankle
Week 8-10 7.5lbs on each ankle
Week 11-13 10lbs on each ankle
Then repeat.
Hope this helps and Good Luck!

Ankle weights hurt your knees...you'll be regretting it when you're an old man and hardly able to walk. Jump roping without ankle weights works fine.

I tried it last year to get ready for the season and i found it hurt my hips a little bit, it put a lot of strain on them and my knees... just jumping rope without anything can give you a real nice workout but if you run cone drills or sprints then use the weights. you should see a big improvement in your agility in weeks.

In regard to jump roping to five minutes, I think its best not to judge your progress so much on time. However more so on programs.
What I do:
Make a box out of like tape on a ground and seperate it into 4 sections.
Start 40 regular
40 side to side
40 front to back
40 just right foot regular
40 left foot regular
40 right foot side to side
40 left foot side to side
Finish off with starting at lower left box jump to top left, top right, bottom right bottom left. Then repeat.
I've been doing this for about a month and I can't begin to describe to you how beneficial it is with the fast twitch muscles in your leg.
Hope that helps.

In junior high we had to do that for gym all the time. You get tired very easily, but it's awesome for you, it keeps your heart rate up and strengthens your calfs and a lot more.

Ok, so im ditching the weights idea, but what kind of differences in speed have you guys noticed? i might not be able to do any jump roping because i just found out that sign ups for lacrosse are tomorrow, meaning wednesday is when hell (conditioning) starts for us. So for the next 3 weeks or so i dont think im gonna be feelig like jumping rope too much. But i still would like to know for when the actual season starts and we work on skills as much as running and i will be less tired.
I wanna know like just your explosiveness and also if your top speed increased.
