I generally get into bed between 10 and 11 at night. Within 45-60 minutes, I'm asleep. I have a terrible time falling asleep every night and it's really annoying. I get incredibly tired, yet I can't fall asleep. I just keep rolling around in bed and looking at my clock. Does anyone have any tips for falling asleep faster?

Don't look at your clock. I used to and it is no bueno.
Just turn off your light when your tired, and make sure it is pitch black. Think about something relaxing and just let your mind wander, don't chase away thoughts or think about something specific after that. Just relax.
Works for me.

The tryptophan in milk will help you sleep and the carbohydrates in sugar will do the same.

they also take more effort to digest...this is why you get so sleepy after thanksgiving dinner (and no..it isnt the tryptophan, there isn't enough in turkey to make you noticably sleepy). Same thing will happen if you eat a big pasta dinner....sleepyyyy
and sorry, I don't have any suggestions...I have horrible insomnia as well

i usually fall asleep while watching tv and then my i set the sleep timer. I usually watch a movie that i've seen a million times or just recently so it doesn't interest me too much.
or use the alternative... stay up all night, sleep in school. when trying to fall asleep in school i'm usually out in less then a min. I imagine it's because of boring teachers, because i know those stupid desks aren't very comfy.

I am having the same problem right now actually. It has been happening A LOT to me lately. I heard not to count sheep because it ends up stimulating your brain. Also, tense up and flex every muscle in bed, from fingers to toes, hold it for as long as you can, then relax.

Close, but not quite. Computer and television backlights mimic sunlight, which resets your circadian rhythm.
Okay - so you have these light receptors in your eyes, and they're extremely sensitive. Light that is or mimics sunlight can tweak those receptors a bit, and wake you up, causing the brain to be more alert and take longer for sleep to set in.
Some people have receptors so sensitive, they can't sleep in anything but pitch darkness, while others (like myself) can sleep with a little bit of light on no problem, and my roommate can will herself to pass out no matter what time of day or brightness she's got to deal with.
But what I would suggest: No tv, no computer at least 30 minutes before bed. No exercise at least 3 to 4 hours before bed. Don't eat a large meal. Try taking a shower before bed, don't do homework in your room (esp. your bed) - your subconscious starts to associate bed with a place of work, not rest. Shower, read, develop a chill-out pre-bed ritual, and you should get to sleep faster. If that doesn't work, see a doctor.

I've been having the same problem lately. I used to fall asleep almost as soon as i hit the bed...but now I guess I get distracted and begin thinking about things and I can be up for hours thinking.
What I try to do is try not to think about anything and not look at my alarm clock. I like to turn the other way and face the wall so that I have less things to distract me.

Usually when I cant fall asleep Im thinking about a girl, because of like drama/friends and other stuff. So could it be a girl you're thinking of? Im just trying to give hints. Also, avoid soda for the 3-4 hours before you go to sleep because that keeps me up.
Or maybe just tire yourself out that much more and work out harder? Hey its modivation, and god knows it works for me, after lax or football conditioning, im walking dead out of the shower and crashing on my bed... hard.
Other than that, I dont know what to say, happy sleeping :-P

I actually have a useful tip for you guys (wow!)... when you lay down curl up into a really tight fetal position so your back is nice and tensed. Then stretch out tall. Doing this a couple times releases muscle pressure on your adrenal glands along your spine. I have done it as part of meditation/relaxation what-have-you, but I would imagine it would help you fall asleep as well

My sleep schedule is pretty messed up. I go to sleep between 2 and 4. I did it basically all summer and I'm trying to go back to normal to get ready for school. It's hard though, I've gone to bed around 10-11 for the past week or something and lay in bed until about 1, then I just go down to my basement and play wall ball until between 2 and 4 and go to bed.

this always works for me. i have one of those clocks that tick-tocks. its a slight tick-tock though, and you can only hear it when its deathly quiet in the room. when i am trying to fall asleep, but cant, i listen the clock, synchronizing my breathing pattern with it. In-2-3-4, Out-2-3-4, In-2-3-4, Out-2-3-4, and so on and so forth. sometimes i will for for 5 or even 6 seconds. not only does this relax your breathing and make your more tired, but it makes you yawn alot, which helps me fall asleep. i have also noticed an increase in my lung strength. all of my friends who start out doing this, try it, and can barely reach 4 seconds in and out. after a while though, they step it up to 5, and some are now at 6 along with me. the point though, is not to breathe in super slow, the point is to get a full, calming, relaxing breath that takes that certain time period. if i wanted to, and i have actually timed this, i can breath in continuously for 47 seconds, but its certainly not relaxing.
the purpose of the yawn in the human body is to disrupt the breathing pattern, and make you more awake and alert. When you are tired, your body naturally takes a rythmic breathing pattern, and you yawn to disrupt that pattern. by making yourself breathe ryhtmically, it makes you more tired. the yawns are proof of that.
