im a first year player and i have a av8 on al6000. ive been looking around and reading a lot about heavy and light sticks and i was wondering, just to get a perspective of how heavy my stuff is, are most shafts lighter than an al6000 and are most heads lighter than mine?

Just about every shaft that isn't aluminum is lighter than yours. I've never used an AV8 before, but I assume its pretty heavy compared to some of the lighter sticks (Truth, torque, etc.). If you were to use the lightest set-up there is, you might shave 6-7 ounces, but thats pushing it. And about 1/3 of a pound isn't too noticable.

Psh. If you were a real man, you'd put that baby on a box shaft. Real lax men rock the heavy sticks.

honestly the al6000 short sticks arent that heavy, but their durability is another story, but also i prefer a heavier style stick, even though the sheer ounces arent really that noticable.

Yeah I use a light stick setup but there isn't a humongous difference in stick weights unless you're comparing an attack stick to a defense stick.

yeah, that's a pretty heavy setup. i've found a lighter setup to be nice because you can feel the ball easier.

Im not gonna go on saying that having a lighter stick is going to make you score 50 more goals or anything, but i went from an alloy 2000 to a db803 and thats like 3 and a half ounces, i can notice a big difference. You guys gotta think that even though its only 3 ounces, in perspective, the stick is say 8 ounces, head is 5, mesh is like 3 or 4, ball is about 5 ounces, so thats 8+5+3.5+5... 21 and a half ounces. Now when you take away 3, thats 1 seventh of the weight, it might not seem alot when you say 3 ounces, but you can notice when something loses a seventh of its weight.

Once again, not gonna make a worlds difference, but its noticebale, and i like the feel of a lighter stick better.

is it really gonna make a large difference at this stage of my game? im a jv middie, i get good playing time, i could possibly scrap some money for a better setup if i was assured it would step my game up significantly. but im skeptical about that. otherwise i'll just continue to try and make the most of what i have now with different stringing and whatnot. so is a lighter shaft gonna help me now? or should i wait.

My opinion: no. Not significantly enough to justify the money you'd be throwing down for a lighter shaft. Get to be a better player with the setup you've got, and when you finally do upgrade, you'll appreciate the difference better.

personally i think you should get a lighter stick. i cant do anything with a heave stick. but whatever is more comfortable for you, go to a friends and try out a lighter stick compared to yours and see wich one you like better.. hope that helps  oh and welcome to TLF and the sport of Lacrosse! Good Luck!

Keep your stick, learning with a heavy stick will be better and switch to a lighter stick later on.

yea i played with an al6000 w/ an av8 my first year as a d-pole....i personally think it made me a better player because when i switched to a lighter pole i noticed it and found it easier to handle.

My first season I switch from my viper/al6000 to a vector/al6000 and it was heavy but after using it and practicing on it I got really good and when I switched to a lighter stick I noticed I could cradle, throw and catch easier.

av8 is a pretty heavy head and the shaft isnt that heavy but not the lightest out there
