Entertainment, enjoyment, and expression
and also, it could be used to help people think or make them calm for phyce them up for a game
If you want music on culture, look into early Nietzsche. He had a lot to say about this subject. (ok, maybe not in American culture, but very relevant.) Also, look for the political implications such PMRC or PMIRC or wahtever that thing with Tipper Gore was where they made the Parental Advisory labels. Stuff like Marilyn Manson w/ Columbine, subliminal messages etc effects political stuff. Just throwin things out there.

I think music is all about self expression. If someone tells you their favorite type of music, you can almost always determine what groups they hang out in, what they think of themselves, etc..

Music is a major factor in culture. It defines who we are and what type of attitude we have. It's a part of us.

however this is applicable to any culture on the planet. Music is just another one of those cultural elements that every culture on the planet has developed to some degree.
Thanks guys, i was able to get a thesis out of that.

It is a cyclical pattern and it is a form of evolution as is all "pop culture"...
music/TV change based on the cultural attitudes at the time...this then influences cultural attitudes itself...which in turn influenecs the TV/music industry...
so gradually over time both are constantly changing and effecting each other...
