I sometimes make a save by deflecting the ball off of my cuff. I like my wrists intact, and my thumbs their natural color (I've got enough bruises on my legs), so you know.

I can't provide for you any sort of comparison, but I dig my goalie Gladiators.

The goalie superfreaks are nice. And yeah, breaking thmubs and splitting nails isn't fun.

Our goalie uses regular gloves and his hands aren't in terrible condition.

Goalie gloves do not inpinge upon movement or anything. The thumb is just super beefy. If you have to money to get the goalie version, I would get them. Probably the superfreaks. My goalie uses his goalie gloves when he plays defense too and he says its not a problem at all.

It's funny. Years ago when I played high school and college ball, there were no goalie-specific gloves, so there was no choice in the matter. However, I do believe that the thumbs and fingers on those older gloves were beefier to some extent than those of today's gloves (the whole glove was bulkier as well.) In that time, I never really managed to injure my thumbs playing in goal.

Nowadays, I love the goalie-specific gloves (the Goalie Glads are what I use), and would probably not use the field ones. I have already taken a couple of hard shots to the thumbs and the Glads did a good job of protecting me. They also don't get in the way or restrict movement at all. I don't really see a downside except for a few extra bucks.
