Players A1 and B1 come out for the face off. Team A is to defend the east goal but A1 sets up with his back to the west goal (the goal team B is to defend). Player B1 protests, stating his own back should be facing the west goal. The ref pauses. "Hmmm......" he says to himself while he scratches his shorts out of consternation.

1. What rule, IF ANY, actually makes what A1 has done illegal?
2. What should the ref do IF this is actually illegal?

(Note: Wing middies can be anywhere along the 20 yard wing lines, closer to their opponent's goal or their own goal. That's what made me think about this quiz.)

This actually happened in a game, and I thought the ref did the wrong thing.

It seems to me like it spells it right out in Rule 4-3. I'd just make them fix it.

I agree, Coach Rob, the ref in your game made a mistake in making the two goalies switch ends to accommodate the wishes of the player A1 above.

Just kidding.

Rule 4-4: Art.1. When a team has all its players on the field, it shall confine ITS GOALIE and three other players behind the def-area line.

No mention in the rulebook about the accepted practice of switching ends at the quarter....

The rules say

The players shall stand on the same side of the field as
the goal each is defending.

The three poles can stand wherever they wish, as can the six other short sticks,
as long as they adhere to 4-4 art 1. Only the team's goalie must be behind his team's defensive area line (attack goal are line for the other team)

The part of 4-3 I quoted was specifically about the faceoff men.

The goalie may be beyond the defensive area line if his team has a man out on penalty. The goalie can even face off, although I don't know why they allow this.

because its totally hilarious when a goalie goes down for a faceoff and clamps.

I was just checking to be sure you know that 4-3.3 states ...the players shall stand on the same side of the field as the goal each is defending... with reference to the face off men. The official in our game allowed them to be reversed, which was an error.

Just more of an FYI than a quiz, but important to know it is based on a rule.

And laxref's point about the GK taking the face off is valid, so long as his team is man down. If all are present, he is not permitted to take the FO.
