It wasn’t much of a game but it was cool for me to get to see Ian Dingman play. He looks kind of lethargic on the field at times, walking during live play, with his stick down…He gives the impression of being a big slow guy… then he comes to life and… bang, he’s got a goal. He was easily the biggest player on the field. He’s able to use his size to get separation and get open enough to receive a pass on the crease. He didn’t go one on one often, I don’t think it was part of the game plan, but St Joes didn’t have anyone who could stop him when he did go. In the one isolation play called for him, He kind of dragged three St Joe’s players from X to the front of the net where he drew the foal. He then made the man up goal. He’s very strong and has surprisingly agile stick skills.
Both teams offense came out kind of slow but Navy was finding their rhythm by the middle of the second quarter. St. Joe’s seemed to be giving Navy a game in the first quarter but they couldn’t muster any offense and they made some sloppy mistakes that got Navy rolling, dropped passes, missed ground balls and bad outlet passes. Navy’s defense looked very tight. It was fricking freezing out there today. Snow flurries in the first half. The sun came out in the second have and it warmed up a little. It was fun to see a game and get the season started.

Thanks for the update on Navy. Dingman really is a presence on the field. I'm glad to see that the Navy defense is coming together because in their scrimmage against UVa they managed to keep Ward out of the picture but did not do much against Danny Gladding. There is nothing better than a giant attackman getting triple-teamed with little effect.

Thanks for the update. I'm surprised St. Joe's was giving them much of a game even in the first quarter...that's a fairly young program.
The weather was indeed pretty frickin' cold out there...my club was out there practicing yesterday in the flurries....brrrr...

It's still Matt Russell, he's a senior now.

I lost my program so I’ll have to take gfgoalie’s word for who was in net (Matt Russell). He was very good at making choices during the clear. He’s very mobile and came out to the midfield line a few times. He wasn’t tested too well by St. Joe’s. I don’t think they had too many shots on net. Navy changed goalies at half. Russell looks as tiny in net as Dinhman looks big on attack.

Random but has anyone realized how small Russell is? I walked next to him at a scrimmage in St. Louis and I was like "wow thats Matt Russell!" ,"He's like 5'2"!"

The people I was with thought he looked short and checked it out on the program. It had him listed at 5ft. 7" He does look small out there. He was fast.
One of the coolest things about the sport is there seems to be a spot for all body types…except maybe mine, old & round, doesn’t stop me from playing.

Exactly, Matt is my hero because he plays big, even though he's small. How many players do you see running out with no arm padding against people 8" taller than them?

i could have sworn matt was a senior last year...i guess not though, ya that is a sweet thing about lacrosse....you can be big & bulky, skiny & quick, tall, short, & it really doesnt matter for positions either...like there are preferred types of course but for instance you could have a small quick attackmen that slips through everyone, or a big guy that uses his body as an advantage

Unfortunately, as in all sports, the size of the players as grown with the sport.
