Whenever I pick up a friends goalie stick, I can't seem to cradle with it, I dont know if its his shallow pocket or my technique

That's probably but what I'll do, but I watch these MLL and college goalies, and there's so much spinning going on

strong wrists, they just move their arms a lot and spin a ton.

Cradling a goalie stick involves more forearm and wrist movement than just wrist movement. I don't know how else to describe it except to say it's a larger, more 'rounded' cradle than with a field stick.
As for spinning the goalie stick, that's something I still can't get used to seeing these days. When I played in HS and college, no one ever spun a goalie stick. It's also a pretty dangerous thing to do because a good player could study your tendencies and spin timing and lace one past you mid-spin.

I don’t cradle I just pass it or kind of twist in my hand witch I guess is somewhat like cradling but if u saw it you’d see the deferens

When i cradle I just do it like I do with a normal stick....but I do find myself spinning the stick alot, and I'm trying to stop....but Its hard to stop.

a strong wrist snap and sometimes an occasional spin when you are dodging. It's all about practice just like everythinig is about practice...

usually i choke down the stick and do a strong bottom hand cradle, but after a face dodge i usually keep it one hand if im along the sidelines by myself

I just cradle like a field stick, I've got (comparitvely) bigger forearms than my teammates...Then again people tell me I cradle shorties like a goalie stick. >_<

I'm a twirler...I'm a goalie and I'm a twirler, It's the same as with a shortpole, if someone wants me to make a demonstration I'm bored so I'll do one really fast

This thread is old and im not really a goalie.. before I traded my Guardian, I got pretty good at cradling with it, I looked very fancy goalie like, and most importantly the ball would stay in. =] and I coudl clear easily from my cradle, so it wasnt like a long process. I miss my goalie stick in a way.

I use my top hand to cradel i never use bottom. When you start as a goalie it just comes to you like i suck with player stuff

I always swing it across my body liek a face dodge when people try to check me. You have to flow with it more because it's heavier and you can't make such sudden movements liek an attack stick.

I cradle it like field stick. You just have to have better ball handling skills than everyone else.

yeah the weight really does change the way you play. i cant even use the heaviest attack stick due to the fact i need more weight to perform effective cradles.

Since I was bored over the summer I got a goalie stick and used nothing but it for a week.. hit the wall and hat people shoot on me like nonstop.. I got so used to the goalie stick, once I picked up my regular short stick, let alone my long pole, it seemed as if i had gone back months in skill progression.. but I was pretty nasty running up the ball with a goalie stick

i went to a Powell Bros. camp a few weeks ago here and oregon and tillman johnson was there. it was tight. he helped alot and he talked about how goalies should cradle with there bottom hand. ive been trying to cradle with my bottom hand the last few days, and i cant do it.
Can someone please enlighten me on the art of bottom handed cradling.

I'll make a little video for you if you REALLY need it, but it's pretty much a cradle, counter-cradle for me...I'll cradle my top hand towards me, and then while the head is upside down cradle the otherway with my bottom hand, it comes natural to me

i can tell you from experience that spinning a goalie stick will only come to bit you in the a**. my freshman year i cant tell you how many times i was stripped or the ball just fell out mid spin. another disadvantage to spinning is that its hard to make a quick pass cause most likely your in the middle of a spin. and as for how to cradle i really dont know what i do it just come natural over the years but i beleive i just do it the same as a short stick.

I just cradle it just like a regular short stick. It works for me.
