I have been searching for a computer for college, and am almost 100% positive I want a laptop. I have been looking around for quite a while now, and found this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7671762&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat64400050004&id=1134703166899. I want to spend under $1,000 dollars sine it is my money. I plan to use it for papers, internet, music, maybe photos and movies (not too much), and the occasional game (but not cutting edge games, more like Age of Empires II and such).
Is this reliable? Is this a good deal? Which brands are the most reliable?

Honestly: Learn how to fix/build your own. The knowledge is invaluable, unless you are getting a laptop.
If you are getting a laptop, Everyone who has a toshiba has only had the best things to say about them, BUT you get what you pay for with them.
edit - be very very careful when getting a Dell. The cheap ones are terrible and they use very low quality parts. Expect things to be replaced very often, also get used to calling them.

Cheap Dells are a piece of junk and im glad that no one is flaming the kids for giving the advice for him to get a Mac. I have to agree, i have a two dell desktops, one dell laptop, and one Mac powerbook...The Mac is easily the best, it might seem weird to use at first, but you will fall in love w/ it

Macintosh's are nice. Theres also a ton of free/cheap shareware software that doesn't even come close to stuff available on Windows.

but do you really know anyone that uses garageband for more than two weeks after they get their computer? I know I don't...
anyway, I am more than pleased with my 12' powerbook. It just works. Does everything I need it to. I don't have any huge demands from it other than internet, music (listening + recording), and word processing, but it still does everything I ask of it. Only thing I have had to fix was my network cable port, but that was my fault. It's also nice that it is small enough I can just toss in my backpack, great for the library in that way. Also, not having to really worry about viruses and such is convenient.

I just got an HP Pavillion dv5000 laptop. It is great. 100gb hard drive, internal wireless, 15.1" widescreen, new amd turion 64 bit processor (mine is the 1.9 ghz model), dvd burner, lightscribe (after burning a cd/dvd you turn the disc over in the tray and it prints a label on it)...GREAT computer.
My old Acer's motherboard died and I can't wait for it to get back from the factory so I got it at CompUSA for $1300 with $200 in rebates. Check that out because I'm not sure how long that price lasts for. I also got a 3 year warranty on it through CompUSA (full warranty) for $350 so even if I'm an idiot, they fix it.
Also, there was an HP laptop with a 2.2 ghz amd turion, 2-80gb hard drives, 17" widescreen monitor, and a separate number pad (which you really never see on laptops) for a few hundred more. I would def. check it out.
I also just recently got an HP Pavilion dv5000 and i love it. Its really an awesome computer, and like Xeclipse19 said, i would def. check it out. but i don;t think that they make laptops anymore. I also hear that Gateway is pretty bad. As far as enjoi said earlier, dells are excellent if you spend the money for a nice one, but their cheap laptops are really bad, and you willl get to know dell customer service quite well after calling them so many times since the cheap dell isn;t working well.

dells are terrible. My parents got one in Summer 2001 and in late 2003 it totally died. I've had a dimension 4400 which wasn't cheap at the time for four years. It always has problems and is about to die, i'm just waiting until the last possible moment.
