A lot of people here, down south, who don't understand the exact concepts, call it hockey on feet. I guess you could use that as a platform and explain the differences between the two.

it is like hockey on feet but incorperates some soccer rules and penalities too. It's the best game in the world....

They don't have to understand the game, only that you love to play and that's all that matters...

if they want to learn because they are interested, take them to one of your games or something so they can better understand then answer any questions they may have.!

Well, like most 'ball' sports, the overall point of lacrosse is to score goals by shooting a hard rubber ball into a goal that is 6'x6' (field lacrosse that is).. There are 10 players aside on each team. each team has a goal keeper, 3 defensemen, 3 midfielders, and 3 attackmen. Midfielders play both offense and defense. Lacrosse does have offsides. on the defensive end, at least four players have to stay back and can not cross the midfield line. on the offensive side, at least three players must stay behind the midfield line.

When a team is attempting to score, and is running set plays, lacrosse resembles basketball very closely in the play calling, picks and rolls, cutting, etc... the defense resembles the play of hockey.. stick checks, body checks, and switching off picks are very common.

penalties for slashing, cross checking, etc.. are very similar to common violations in hockey.

a lacrosse game will start with a face off at the center of the field. two players crouch with their sticks on the ground and when the whistle blows, they will fight for the ball. on either side of the face off, midfielders will line up and will help try and secure the ball when the whistle blows. the defenders, goalies, and attackmen, must remain in their designated "box" areas until posession is signaled by the refs.

lacrosse combines the finess play of basketball, the rough scrappy style of football, and the checking and aggressiveness of hockey.

in most cases games are played with a standard set of equipment. Players will wear helmets, gloves, arm pads, shoulder pads, and rib pads (not required)... attackmen and midfielders or "short sticks" carry sticks that range from 40" in length to 42".. defensemen will generally carry sticks that are up to 6' in length... the shafts of the sticks are made up of higher end metals such as titanium, and other alloys. the heads of the sticks are made of hard nylon/polymer compounds that are flexible, tough, and light at the same time. the pockets of the sticks are generally a synthetic mesh or leather/cross lace combo (keeping with the tradition of the game).. there are stick regulations such as rules limiting the pocket depth, hold, and stick length..

etc.. etc.. etc..
