Does anyone know why Catch 22 is a banned book. I suggested we read it to my enlish teacher and she said that it was a banned book. I couldnt find any specific reason its banned. Does anyone know? Links to quotes that are controversial?

Banned as in we can't read it as a class.

Maybe in your high school English class, but I'm sure you could check it out from your HS library or city's public library. I recall reading that the author, Joseph Heller, was enthusiastically greeted when he appeared at the Air Force Academy. And thanks to Google I can share:

"Catch-22": Cadets Hail a Chronicler of the Absurd (http://www.nytimes.com/books/98/02/15/home/heller-cadets.html)

Date: October 6, 1986, Monday, Late City Final Edition Section B; Page 10, Column 3; National Desk
Byline: By ANDREW H. MALCOLM, Special to the New York Times COLORADO SPRINGS, Oct. 4

Lead:
It was love at first sight.

The first time the cadets at the Air Force Academy saw Joseph Heller walk into the cavernous auditorium, they fell madly in love with him. Nearly 900 future officers stood as one to applaud the white-haired author as he arrived to begin a weekend-long celebration.

The occasion was the 25th anniversary of the publication of ''Catch-22,'' the novel that captured the insanity of war and the human condition while adding a phrase to the English language.
....

Never throw anything away.

There are tons of "banned" books...but that doesn't mean anything. They just have something in them that could be found offensive (talking about sex!! we can't have our poor impressionable children reading about sex...where's my remote?). You can still buy them at a bookstore or get them from the library

Logic is not generally associated with people who ban books.

Catch-22 was a required reading for my sophomore year and I did a term paper on the book in my junior year. It is mainly banned in public schools because of language and stupid crap like that. Thats what you get when the PTA gets together and whines and ******* about things.

i cannot see the point of banning any book. at all. i mean, there are some things that are just so messed up that you wouldn't want to read them, but if you do, that's your problem (i'm not talking about you, i'm just saying in general.)

Im reading it right now. I think that its a good book. But overall I think it is boring. I mean for like the whole book he gives descriptions on everybdoy hes around. Im probably going to get yelled at for this but I really don't like it.

There's language and some language that is insensitive to some races, but stuff like that can be found in many high school texts. Catch 22 is a great book, and it's a shame some people frown on the language and/or terminology.

You should ask your English teacher if "Farenheit 451" is banned also.

I really wish you were joking.... that's probably the most disconcerting thing I've heard all week. How ironic to ban a book that's theme is censorship of books.

These are both books that, being forced to read for HS, I hated havingto read... but now I view as a shared experience and a message that every young thinker should be exposed to. (Those and Orwell's 1984) Yeah, I know, there are better things to do (video games, movies, lax, girls... not in that order) than read some stupid book but you should at some point in your life read these.

Both those books are amazing. Farenheit I liked better because it had a more serious style, but Catch-22 was great as well, very funny.
