The English band Arctic Monkeys set debut album sales records in the Uk and now the album is blazing up the US charts. I'm a big fan and have actually known about them for about a year now (I know you all are impressed). Anyway I was wondering how the people at TLF feel about their music, whether you've heard them (if u haven't u should) and how you feel about the state of rock when this band is hailed as a savior.

I like 'em. I think they're good. It's a nice unique sound.
The only reason they are so popular is because they released their album to major illegal file distributors.

Unique?
Think British bands alt/indie/pop 1979 ~ 1995 = Arctic Monkeys.
Its a good album, don't get me wrong, just not enough to make top 10 of NME's top 50 english bands of all time list.

They are huge over here, but then indie music is the current darling of the press and a huge number of young music fans. Personally, I think im going to shoot myself the next time a band is heralded as 'the next biggest thing' who will invariably sound exactly the same. The indie guitar tone is just the most hideous thing going.

Yeah, maybe unique was the wrong word. They're different than any new bands I've heard in a while.

Thats true. Alot of american kids never hear about the cool bands outside the U.S. just because the RIAA companies won't promote them.

^^^^ i very very highly disagree with the above statement. the only English bands i like are 1) the (perfect) cure 2) Placebo
thats it. we taught them everything they know. over there it all sounds the same these days. im dead serious. i cant stand british rock. its horrific and lurid. i like Aussy rock better then brit rock. and aussy rock isnt that good.
but returning to the topic at hand...i dont like the Arctic Monkeys. just some 19-20 yr olds make dancy rock, and becoming millionaires for it. its already been done before. ive heard that kind. and the Americans do it better. they would not have done so good if they originally released in the land of the free, the home of the brave. and i too have heard about them for about a year, maybe a wee bit longer. they played it on the alternative radio station i listen too for maybe 2-3 months before it died.
we taught them everything they know about rock.
but then again, this is all my opinion.

a really good band that i think will start to take over the music scene. i know that everyone says this about them but when they released their first album they had only been playing instuments for 3 years. that's amazing, just think how awesome they'll be in a few years. even though the riffs in the songs were basic the way they blended the chords with their up-beat tempo worked really well. they are going to put out a new complete album this spring, not sure on specific date. i'm not really a big fan of today's rock music and i can't think of a band that really dominates the scene today, just a bunch of mediocore bands. so for me i really hope these guys stay around for many years.

don't really agree with that. the rock n roll revolution started with the beatles, the hard rock revolution started with led zepplein and the metal revolution started with black sabbath and continued with judist preist taking it to the next level. all of those bands from the UK. so as for your comments about we taught them everything not true at all. nothing wrong with being patriotic but unfurtunatley ignorance may come along with it. as for not likeing the arctic monkeys i think that they are better than american groups that have a similar style but that's just my opinion and i can see how people wouldn't really like them.

Actually thats not totally true.
What happend is that the Beatles and other Rock bands took the basic ideas from the Blues here, and applied it to British pop music.
We are EXTREMELY indebted to British musicians whether you care to acknowledge this or not. I mean, even Jimi Hendrix (american) learned what he knew about guitar by living in London for quite some time. Not to mention most of the "revolutionary" artists I feel come from across the pond what America is good at is introducing them to the world at large.
Agreed. And I won't listen to Arctic Monkeys. I'm sick of the trends. I'm in love with the NYC scene. Still, if you need a launching point to get into indie music, that's fine. Mine was Interpol, actually. At the very, very first. My first non-Radiohead album was Modest Mouse, followed by Trail of Dead's Source Tags and Codes. But I hear they are fun live.
This is the greatest song ever: myspace.com/stellastarr, then My Coco. This song brings back the mems.

because that isnt a trend.
No, it's not a trend, and I have no idea why you're telling me it is. Sonic Youth is 25 freaking years old. They aren't the next hot band to hop across the Atlantic to Save Rock and Roll. Of course, if you're using a different definition of trend, then you should probably come off less insulting, other wise I might have to prove the fact that I know my crap. And no one wants that. It's just another long, boring post.

Its called "Post-Punk Revival" which included bands such as:
Interpol (Roxy Music/Joy Division/Echo & The Bunnymen)
The Killers (New Order + Joy Division)
The Strokes (Echo & The Bunnymen)
The thing is those bands basically followed a trend, or well to better put it they all came out at the same time. I think you don't listen to the Arctic Monkey's more because of the huge hype surrounding them, which honestly ignore the hype. They are definetely not part of any recognizable trend being more of a poppier Dance-Punk, which was a trend a full 3 years before they became a band. (they came together in 05, and dance-punk came about in 02 and "died" in 03)
Trust me its not a bandwagon, and they made a good album.

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion, but do you really think Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and The Clash weren't influential to countless American bands?
A better way to put it is that the Brits and Yanks worked off each other and improved, innovated, and advanced each other's work.
what are some good songs to start out with
the view from the afternoon, i bet you look good on the dancefloor, when the sun goes down, leave before the lights come in, i like all four of those a lot but the whole album Whatever People Say I am Thats What I'm Not. And for people who say its a trend, for me it definitely was not, here, in Washington DC most people haven't even heard of them, my friend showed me their songs and thats how i got into it, i had'nt even heard about them before that.
