NFHS Rules (although it's probably the same in NCAA):
Player A1, 15 yards in front of the team B's goal and with possession, sends the ball toward goal and yells "Shot" so that his teammates can chase the ball in case it misses. It does indeed miss (high), and his teammate A2, who was behind the goal when A1 fired the ball toward the goal, is inbounds and is clearly the closest to the ball at the time it exits the field and touches the ground beyond the endline. A3 is next closest. Nobody from team B is anywhere near the exiting ball (all of them are still in front of the goal) as none of them even gave chase. Yet, the official for some reason awards the ball to team B at the point it left the field over the endline.
What's up here? (This is not a trick, so don't read more into this than is written. A2 was closest, team B was nowhere near it.) This is a common situation we all need to be aware of.
