Bulldogs Mix Strong Attack With Usual Solid Defense

During the past several years, the Churchill boys' lacrosse team has found success thanks in large part to tough and stifling defense.
With seniors Andrew Friedson and Matt Goldstein patrolling the area around their cage this year, the Bulldogs' defense should again be hard to crack. If last night's 14-8 victory over Seneca Valley was any indication, however, Churchill's offense could be the fuel this season.
After a sloppy first half in which the Bulldogs failed to convert on a three-minute, non-releasable penalty, Churchill exploded for eight goals in a 12-minute 1-second stretch bridging the third and fourth quarters.
The 8-1 run blew open a game that Churchill led by just one goal at halftime.
"We didn't come out ready to play in the first half," said Churchill's Jeff Fritz, who earned his first victory as a coach over his alma mater in four tries. "But we got our act together at halftime, got fired up and came out to play."
The Bulldogs (4-0) did not wait long to strike after halftime. Senior midfielder Alex Middel won the opening faceoff, sprinted downfield and whipped a pass to junior attackman Brant Fischer, who fed senior attackman Blake Miller for a goal. The polished sequence took 10 seconds.
"We return almost everybody on offense, so that really helps," Miller said. "We've played together for a whole year now, so we're real familiar with one another."
Miller led the Bulldogs with a career-high five goals and one assist. Fisher finished with three goals and three assists and Middel had two goals and two assists and won 12 of 16 faceoffs. Defending Maryland 3A/2A West Region champion Seneca Valley (1-2) kept the game close, thanks to junior attackman Caz Rubacky (five goals) and 16 saves from freshman goalkeeper Ryan Milford. Milford deflected four shots, including one at point-blank range, during the Screaming Eagles' three-minute man-down situation.
"He can go nowhere but up," Seneca Valley first-year coach Kevin Linton said. "He's got a great attitude and I couldn't be more pleased with him."
