Looking for a couple of new whistles for this year, regulary lose mine and need to have spares. Usually use a Fox 40, and assume this is pretty much the standard for referees. What you using
By the way - found Fox 40 for $3.60 each at

OK so maybe a bird dog or two show up at games and answer the whistle :chuckle:

I have a Fox 40 finger whistle and a Fox 40 Pearl finger whistle. The Pearl has a different note, and I started using it when I was getting bad ringing in my ears after doing lots of games. Because of the different sound, some fellow refs thought I wasn't blowing my whistle well, so I've been using the regular 40 again.
I also have an old chrome Acme Thunderer, what used to be the old standard.

I had the same problem and also switched to the Fox 40 Pearl Finger Grip. And screw it if people think I'm not blowing my whistle well enough; my hearing is more important than that.
The Fox 40 Pearl finger grips are getting hard to track down, so I bought 3 of them the last time I found them.

Has anbody worn ear plugs to decrease the effects of the whistle on their ears? It may limit your ability to hear comments from players, so I was wondering if anybody tried it.

Hey, if they limit your ability to hear comments from coaches it may be a good idea!

The Fox 40 Classic whistle's chambers are designed to self-clear when submerged in water. The Fox 40 Classic also has no moving parts to freeze or jam! Recommended.
Are you serious? Anything that can do this... sign me up for like, 34.

Yes that is correct. This is why it is the most preferred whistles for sporting officials.

I use the Fox 40 finger whistle CMG (cushioned mouth guard). Runs about $8-9. Most of the lacrosse guys here use some version of the Fox 40. We do have a problem in football where they are hard to hear in large crowds, particularly if the wind is blowing strong and/or the official doesn't put a lot of air into it, but I have never had a problem with it in lacrosse.

great whistle, i bought a bunch for my mom to keep in her kayaks.
sadly, while i wear my fox 40 around my neck at practice, i rarely use it, i'm much louder yelling than it is tweeting!

We used to use Acme Thunderers for ocean lifeguarding. They were pretty loud, but the cork would get soft as the summer went on and then it wouldn't sound as good. We switched to Fox 40s about 15 years ago and never looked back.
Common lifeguard tricks: take the cork out of your partner's whistle while he or she is at lunch (makes it sound pathetic), or put sunscreen in the whistle so when they blow it it sprays all over.

For those that saw the movie marathon remake version of the Titanic, did it bother anyone besides me that when the girl awoke from sleeping in the frozen waters, she pulled a whistle off a dead crewman who had been floating for hours in the frozen ocean and when she blew the whistle to get the attention of the rescue boat, the whistle worked perfectly!!! :bull:
Never would have happened in real life, then. Today, all the boat people should carry Fox 40's and they won't have that problem. :chuckle:

I know a few parents on the sidelines that would have prefered to be wearing earpugs when I went by and blew the whistle. Nothing like a fox to stop a play. :chuckle:

Maybe I should get a 40 Pearl or two. For those games on side by side fields. Whistle from one field sometimes stops the other field.
I use a "freight train" whistle right now, but they are thin and do not last in my equipment bag.

Worst Whistle EVER
I used one with finger grips for hockey, and the whist broke off the grips, so I got a new one. Guess what, broke same way.
Got a ACME Thunderer, best whistle ever. Sounds great too, and cost less. Get the Thunderer

They aren't designed to be used outside in 60 below Canadian weather!

Doesn't it freeze to your lips?
Serously, though, I've had a Fox 40 Pearl for about 7 years and it hasn't broken yet. Maybe you bought some from a bad batch?

Lax Ref you jerk.
It does freeze to my lips though.
Hockey is indoor eh? it's only liek -5 celcius in there
Alright I'll explain the sound.
My Fox 40 was deep and good but it was so quiet, I ahd to blow a lung to get it aboove the crowds.
My thunderer is so much more shrill and its alot louder, I no longer blow a lung

I use an Acme Thunderer because the name is both cool (Thunderer) and quintessential (Acme) at the same time.
I wrote Acme to suggest that they get Wile. E. Coyote to endorse their stuff, but they never wrote back......
and I guess it sounds OK. Kids stop (or start) playing when I blow it. What more do you want?

Just kidding, dude!
Don't they play hockey outside there, too? There's a lot of outdoor hockey in the U.S. Well, I guess there is where it's cold enough to do hockey outside. Not so much in California.

I tried it but quickly abandoned it. It interfered with too many other things, even though I only used an earplug in one ear and tried to blow the whistle on that side. The Fox 40 Pearl is different enough in tone that I haven't had to try it again.

Used to use an Acme Thunderer when I worked as a Doorman at a large hotel while in college. Still have it tucked in a drawer somewhere. But on the field the Fox40 is still the best. I worked with a ref last week who had a "tweeter" and we had a hard time hearing his whistle.

I love my collection of Acme Thunderers, the name says it all. The Fox 40 is just too shrill for me.
