I dont want to where goalie pants because they are huge and make you look like a wimp, but I was wondering, is it legal to wear football thigh pad things? They aren't real big so they arent very noticable, especially under baggy pants so they dont make you look like a pansy. Im sure I might wear em anyways like to games and stuff, but is it legal?

Why do you care like looking like a whimp? Just put the goalie pants on and swallow your pride.

If thats what it takes for you to play goalie, go for it. There is no shame in wear extra protection.

Won't you need football pants on to keep them in place?

Here's the way i see it wear the pants and if anyone says anything just say, "I don't see you trying to stop a hard *** ball coming 60 mph at you." Then see waht he says.

cuz i mean i won't lie it takes balls to play goalie

60? I don't know where you play man, but the balls my school's varsity shoots are usually at least 70 mph.

You dont need football pants to keep football thigh pads in place. you can get a football girdle.

Football girdles keep your hip pads and butt pad in place. Not your thigh pads. They go in the pants with your knee pads.

i have a girdle that hold everything except for the knee pads so there are some good ones out there that do hold the thigh pads just matters which one you buy

What ever helps you. Alot of goalies wear some kind of pad.

Aye, im with XEclipse on this one. It doesent hurt much at all, especially if your adrenaline is pumping in a real game. If its a practice and you get a thigh stinger...Thats the only time I would ever even consider wearing goalie pants, practicing with like DI college guys. But then again, I've never worn goalie pants. >_>

Matt Palumb, one of the best goalies of all time (and one of the refs during last years FF) was famous for wearing football pants when he was Syracuses goalie during the late 80s

you may get some greif, but theres some serious history to doing it, national championship history.

(besides if your teammates dont like it, tell THEM to step into the cage)

Good post. Here's Matt's history on that:

"Bobby Mumphrey wants to know:
Why football pants?

The football pants kind of happened by accident. Toward the end of my freshmen year, I sprained my knee bad enough that I needed to wear one of those big metal-and-whatever braces. I had always worn shorts, and one day Coach Roy Simmons mentioned to me that he didn’t like the idea of our opponents seeing a brace on my knee. He thought it should be covered. I’ve never liked sweats – they always felt heavy to me. I told our equipment man Kyle Fetterly that I wanted to wear football pants.
This all transpired on a Friday and we were playing at Hopkins the next day to open the ‘88 season. I was expecting a pair of white pants like I had seen Jamie Molloy wear in goal, eight or nine years before I got to Syracuse. When I walked into our locker room at Homewood, Kyle had the orange pants hanging in my locker. We won. I only wore the brace for about another month, but the pants stayed!"

Haha @ Spenny's comment.

But seriously, if you're just getting used to the stings and bruises, then add some extra padding on. But if you just can't deal with the pain, I'd suggest stepping out of the cage. The last thing a team needs is a goalie who feels he can't stay in goal because it might hurt if he makes a save with his body.

Look at it this way: a shot to the body is a shot that doesn't go in. What really sucks is when it pounds you in the leg, then goes in. :thumbsdow

You can buy football girdles that hold your thigh pads in also. I had one, it's made by McDavid

Dude, if you are just starting to play goalie, then thigh pads may be a good idea, but if you are afraid of the pain, don't waste your team's time in the net. It doesn't hurt in a game, with all the adrenaline

LaxImus

I mean shiat ill wear pads at pratice sometimes only cause i take way more shots there then in a game. But here is my philosophy just remember that they arent trying to shoot the ball at you but rather around you, oh and effn when the adrenaline is pumping in any game situation i feel no pain.

getting hit in the thighs isn't all that bad. it might sting for a minute but then your set. if you step to the ball then it doesnt hurt as much as waiting for the ball to hit you (i think it has something to do with the way your muscles contract). just tough it up b/c you're not dying. Also not wearing them makes you want to get your stick there that much sooner.

if you wear the pads you can block with your legs more and it wont hurt as bad, so id say go for it. You probably would receive a lot of trash talk though if anyone notices. i would actually only do it in cold weather because that's the only time the ball really hurts me...(i play d-pole so i dont really know anything about goalie)

WPSLAGoalie28

I wore thigh pads for a couple of games last year, mostly in the cold. I tought they helped but i didn't really notice that much of a difference. If you think they make you play better go ahead and wear them.

i know it is legal. but if you need protection then what does it matter if you look like a pansy or not. it hurts pretty bad gettin hit in the thigh so i say wear em.

take the pain it only stings for a second if ur brave enough to hop in net u gotta be brave enough to take rubber at 75 mph as teh goalie u gotta be the craziest kid on ur team and every1s gotta know that plus if u get hit there u have a bruise to remid u u made a big save

Are you kidding me? They already talked about that a lot!!

Anyways, onto the original question. I laugh at other goalies that wear thigh or shin pads. So unless you want to be laughed at I say take the pain, or get out of goal. You might want to try sweat pants during practice. They take away a bit of pain and don't make you look like a pansy. They keep you warm too when you are practicing in the cold and just standing around in the goal. I've been wearing them for a while now cause it's been cold here.

i have been looking for i nice pair of pants becuase its really cold were i play and practice also we play in snow and everything hurst more when ur cold
but if u put on the pants to stop the pain one thing must happen:
u better throw urself at the ball cuz u have a chest protector helmet AND pants to u should never be afraid of getting pain cuz u cant.
A second thing might happen:
when i get hit in the knees shins and thighs yeah sure it kinda hurts but i can also tell were the ball goes after i get hit and i can tell whay i did wrong if the ball hits me or skimms me and goes in
good luck and if people laugh, f*** them cuz it takes balls to be a goalie; 90mile per hour 1.5 lb balls getting whiped at u isnt painless.

True for most of what you said, except a lacrosse ball doesn't weigh 1.5 pounds. The ball is between 5 and 5.25 OUNCES, which is a little over 1/4 pound.

But it's true. Many attackmen and middies don't know the sting of a lacrosse ball, but I garauntee you if you ask any goalie or pole if a lax ball hurts on a cold day you'll get a blank stare, and possibly a punch to your eye.

in my opinion, and i did play a little bit of goalie for our local club team, i think that wearing those pants gives you the confidence to stop the ball and that is what a goalie needs most so i think that they help your confidence(and your legs) feel better

dude, dont worry about what you look like, it takes balls for anyone to step towards a hard speeding object, when their instincts are saying, "get out of the way you idiot!!!!!" Do whatever you need to do your job! Remember, without you, there is noway to keep the balls out of the net!
