when are attackmen allowed up to the half-field line? is it only when they have the ball?

no, they stand at the line when the ball is in their defensive end too

i'm not sure exactly what you mean

if you mean during a faceoff, you are restricted to the box until the ref calls posession

if you just mean during regular play, you can use the whole offensive half, you can go anywhere in there at any time (except the crease)
your coach may want you to play in a certain place, do what he says. when we are on defense, my preference to to have 2 of my attackmen to be right up on the mid line, and one a few yards above the restraining line.

it you mean ofsides, offsides works like this:
you must have 3 players in the offensive half of the field (the side with the other team's goal) usually the 3 attackmen.
you also mush have 4 players in the defensive half of the field (the side with the your team's goal) usually 3 defensemen and 1 goalie.

for either a defenseman of an attackman to cross the mid-line a middy needs to stay back.

tip: if you get a penalty for offsides, run down and play defense, you have already gotten the penalty for being offsides, run down and double the ball till the other team drops it. at least the other team wont get a goal before the extra man situation. just doen slash anyone and get a second penalty

Few points

First a face off and its restrictions end not only when a team gets position of the ball but also:
Ball crosses on of the defensive area lines
Ball goes out of bounds and is awarded to a team
There is a time serving penalty

Second if B1 goes offsides, or commits any technical foul, when A has the ball then A scores a goal the technical foul is waved off and there is a face-off. This is slightly different from a personal foul, which is always time serving.

you are correct. i wrote posession, but what i really meant was release the ref doesnt call posession.
the players are also released in all of those other situations.
my apologies for the confusion.

as for the technical vs personal you are also correct, but if after getting the technical if you go double the ball, it is less likely that the opposing team will score. and you can then take your chances in man down. you may escape with no goals scored against you.

Yeap. Once you get called for offsides(with a flag) you can stay offsides.
