Another head scratcher from yesterday's game.
Shot, block, ball down in the crease. Attackman pushes a defender from behind, causing him to sprawl in the crease and interfere with the GK trying to pick up the ball. Rolled onto the keeper's feet, as a matter of fact.
I called a play on, and tried to sort out whether a GK interference could be made of that push while holding my hand up. Fortunately, the keeper secured the ball and made a lovely outlet pass to a breaking middie, but what if it had failed? Ball outside the box or at the mid X?
What if the Keeper had secured the ball and stayed entangled with the defender and missed his 4 second window, or, worse yet, been knocked with ball into the cage by the defender leaping back up?
It's these little moments of panic that make me glad I have a partner, a rulebook in my pocket, and this board.

There's no interference between a defender and a goalie. Once the goalie picks up the ball the play-on is over. What ever happens because of that is tough luck for the defense.

True, but of course if the GK can't pick up the ball and the ball rolls into the goal, the goal is waved off because there was a play-on against the scoring team.

There's no way it could be a free clear in this case, even if you ruled (incorrectly) that the attackman is guilty of interference because he pushed the defender illegally, since the contact occurred during a loose ball. Loose-ball goalie interference is a play-on, with the ball awarded outside the box if the offense doesn't keep playing.
If the goalie gets the ball, the play-on is over, although this is a case where you should probably have an extremely short play-on. If the defender knocks over the goalie while getting up, the defender is ruled, under NCAA and NFHS rules, to be stupid.

Your only options here are
Push => award ball outside box to clearing team, or
Illegal Body Check if he really put his shoulder into him => FD, 1 min, restart across midfield.
Remember, there is almost always a personal foul available to you to control those who are prone to cheap shots.
