This is my first year playing lacrosse and i can do everthing really well i just dont understand slides. Are coach is telling us to slide from the crease and i understand who the 2 is but i dont know who the 3 is. Also what does im hot and fire mean. If someone could explain this as if the offense was in a 1-4-1 that would be great. Thanks alot.

Slides are basically moves to cover an attacker who has doged his man, or a backfill move to cover the man left open by the #1 slider. In essence, it's a chain of slides that attempts to cover the people closest to the ball, leaving the player farthest from the ball open because he is presumed to be the least dangerous player at that time.
"I'm hot" means that you are the next slide. You call this out to signal to the rest of the defense that you are ready to make the slide if needed.
"Fire" or "Go" or "Bingo" are used by the goalie or the crease defenseman to call for a slide.

Our philosophy is if your backside you slide. That means that if the dodger is going away from you, you are going to slide. The idea is that you are going to leave the farthest guy, or most difficult pass open.

that makes alot of sense, instead of burning one guy you burn two and have a wide open guy to pass too

You say "I'm hot" if you're the guy who will be sliding. For us the D guy says "fire" when he slides so the rest know to also slide.
I'll try to do this for 1-4-1, assuming the guy up top has the ball.
Now everyone is on their man, right? But the Attackman behind the goal is not a threat so the guy that should be defending him should be in front of the crease. This guy would say "I'm hot." Now if the guy up to who has the ball gets past his defender the goalie should yell "Slide" or whatever term he uses. The D guy on the crease who is "hot" will slide up to the guy with the ball. Now this part is kinda hard to explain, but it's not that complicated. After the "hot" guy slides up. The rest of the Defense will also have to slide to cover the Offense.
That probably sounds confusing, just ask some of the upperclassmen D. They should be able to help you out. Ask your coach if you can walk through a slide and have him explain it to you.
