Im a freshman and i have played attack for 3 years. I went into tryouts with high hopes of making varsity...our team in new and were in st. louis and i consider myself to be pretty descent. Well it turns out that i didnt make it and another attackman did. I consider myself to have better stick still and shot than him but hes faster.
Do you think the coaches were justified in their desicion of choosing athleticism adn good skills over ok athleticism and great skills
I need some feedback so i can get some sleep at night and so i know what to work on.

was the kid older than you?...they might want you to develop a little bit more before you go varsity.

yeah especially in newer programs they need to look for potential. if there is an athletic kid, the coaches will try to develop his lacrosse skills. thats a lot easier and faster to do than to take a kid with decent lacrosse skills and make him a better athlete.

ya there could be a lot of different reasons..if you're recognizing that this kid is a better athlete than you thats good though & thats just something you have to work on more(while balancing everything else)....it doesnt help to have amazing stick skills if you can't get yourself open for a shot ya know?you stand flat footed on a crease & someone's gonna clean your clock

I Think it depends on whether the kid is older than you.

i remember my freshman year when the same thing happened to me. I had good stick skills and was decently athletic as well. I played jv and learned a lot about my game and also got good game experience. If i would have played v I probably wouldn't have learned as much.

look at it as you'll be getting more playing time in the games than you might on varsity, so youll get more experience of in game action and get more glory too if you score a lot and stuff

one day youll go up to a coach and say, coach im better than him at passing, shooting, and all other fundementals. the coach will respond "son i can teach him how to pass, shoot, and move, but i cant teach you to be big and fast

seriously, ask him. Say, "why didnt i make varsity, and what do i need to do to get a spot next year" thats what i did. Thsi way, you have something to focus on in the off season

he probably wants to get you playing time on jv this year because it does you no good to ride the pine on varsity

Don't sweat not making V. Get the playing time on JV. It will mean a lot more to your development. A freshman on V may not see much playing time, only a few touches in a few games. If your JV coach is good, you will benefit more in the long run by learning more from him in game situations than from practicing with the V. Wait until preseason next year, or after season this year to ask what it will take for you to make V. He has enough on his plate right now other than listening to a freshman whine.

I agree, but make sure you do it in a respectful tone the part of what do i need to do to get a spot next year is what the coach wants to hear - that you are determined to get it done, he does not want to hear that you are upset he didn't "give it" to you - I'm sure that ColtsLax had the same thing in mind as what I just said, I just wanted to emphasize it cuz it is mucho importante
