Quick video that i took a little while ago tonight, tryouts are starting monday and this will be my first season for high school, only my 2nd season ever. Just wanted to get some opinions on my stickwork.

How does it look? Anything i could improve on that you see? Anything that really stands out that i need to work on? Yes, i can do all of that with gloves on exactly the same. I also realize that the light is in the way for a bit of it, but you get the idea.

Opinions?

Thanks!

looks pretty good , you must practice alot nice work .... as for your tryouts just make sure that you dont twirl your stick like that as i imagine you will probably get your stick smacked out of your hand ...i dont no how it is for field but in box coaches pretty much want to see quick accurate passes and if you twirl like that it tends to slow a pass down ... just my opinion ... good luck with tryouts though !

yeah and as a D pole, i'll always look for your butt end or the head of the stick, which you are leaving open. so bring it closer into your body and slide your bottom hand down and protect that from any lift/slap/poke checks. and watch a d poles shadow if the try to come over your head for the head of your stick. and with the spinning its a whole lot easier to take the stick out of your hands because you have no grip on the stick when it is spinning it is basically just resting in your palms.

P.S. fix that ceiling tile you messed up in the video i kept concentrating on that throughout the entire video

Don't hang your stick so much when you throw. The chances of losing the ball increase when its hanging

Yeah i know about the twirling, i just like showing off. Lol. I don't do it that much in games, honestly. And about hanging my stick, i'm glad you pointed that out. Thats something i guess i need to work on. When i take shots, i tend to hold it way out like that, and wind up. Even when i pass, i tend to hold my arms out really long and far away from my body and cradle a bit before i let it go. Should i change how i do this? Any tips?

Thanks for the praise, too! I have been practicing a lot and working hard, in hopes of making the team in hopes that it pays off.

As for Will and Grace, there was a show on before it that i was watching (beauty and the geek or something) and i just muted the TV. haha

It all depends on your situation. For example, it its a time and room shot, you want to extend your arms as much as possible, but if youre in tight with a guy breathing down your back, shorten up a bit. Gotta be able to "feel" those around you and react to it. A quick release is also huge here too. Sometimes you can bring your aerms all the way back with a guy on you if your release is quick enough (ala Joe Walters). I dont know if youre at that level though no offense :nahya:

sad but true, my coach used to hit me in my arm as hard as he could when i spun my stick. its probably the worst thing you could do when you play lacrosse. drop the habit.

Dont spin your stick...I used to do it all the time. It was a horrid habit. I just had my coach make me do 10 pushups everytime i spun it...It worked.

ya you said you knew about the stick spinning thing so i won't critqiue you anymore on that...as far as the whole stick thing goes just like JMR said as a D pole i also look for guys who dont cover their butt...by doing that you make it really easy for osmeone to take the ball away...i know its easier to switch hands if your bottom hand is up higher but its a bad habit...& as far as cranking back to take shots just like the other guy said...if your you know working the ball around or away from a threat no problem, helps get more power behind that shot but (assuming you're middie) you sweep...get free you're driving in..you burnt your guy you crank back & you've set him up to kill your shot.you either have to risk it & jsut shot fast or if you can it'd probably be a bit better to not crank as much...but other then that....... :concerned fix the ceiling tile please

OH YES. You have no idea how bad it is to hang your stick when passing or shooting. Work on keeping the head (i say head because you need to concentrate on where that is when you're passing/shooting) closer to your body. Try and hide the stick from your backside as much as you can.

Once again, you said you know about the stick spinning, so i won't chew you out about that.

What are you doing spinning your stick?, the admin should change your name to the redbaton, just kiddin but all kidding aside you should really not do that and you should work your stick work more, its not quite up to par and you can tell its your second year, and since i see how your arm are when you cradle you should probaly work on how you throw too

when you switch hands, dont do it right in front of your body like that, take the stick low and protect it, like make a V with the head, go down switch hands then bring it back up quick, same thing as a split dodge.

yeah i think u get the idea to not twirl. its really annoying to watch too. it doesnt do anything. speaking as a defender..keep the stick in closer to ur body. sticks that are away are very easy to hit. um watch ur butt end..if u watch the video itd be very easy to poke under neath and lift up..really just work more in a mirror with gloves on keeping in tight under control without twirling..go watch the mikey powell clips we have all seen on his website. thats ur new hero lol

im not really sure what ur doing in this video cus that really doesnt show much related to stickwork besides a quasi split dodge half way through, u should play on the wall, dont spin ur stick that much, play with gloves, if ur an attackmen, choking up will help a lot ... it did for me

smooth transition between right to left and vice versa!
But ya dont spin your stick. Its a bad habit that takes away from your ability to quick stick and a little bit of ball control.

LaxMaxVince
05-26-2006, 10:36 PM
Spinning your stick is a bad habit. But I know its hard to avoid. Before you make a pass, it looks like you bring your stick pretty far away from your body. Its probably your style, but its better to keep your stick closer to your body.

it is good to mess around - but where would you use that on the field? Dance in front of me like that I would drop you. Work on dodges and be ready to pass or shoot at all times. keep your stick away from the defender...

The following are all just suggestions and tips-take them not offensively, but as constructive criticism:

-All you really do is use your right hand and occassionally switch to your left
-You spin your stick way too much. I saw less cradling than twirling
-When you switch your hands, it's very slow and you hang out the top part of your stick a lot-that's going to be completely useless in a game unless you're unguarded
-You leave out your butt end a lot whenever you cradle and use your stick-poles will LOVE that
-How is spinning your stick "showing off"? Anyone can do that. In fact, the unlucky ones that keep to it make it a bad habit.
-I really didn't see any instinctual stick protection. A lot of stick hanging, and when you put your hands back like when you were going to pass or shoot, all you did was just kinda half cradle back there. You need to twist your body if you're going to do that.
-Make your hand changes much faster too.

I ditto everything said, but I am sure either the guy made the team or quit lax altogether cause you guys literally smashed his ego.

I just had to laugh at Nreeder33 and the comment

Twirling is a habit that a lot of kids start out doing pretty early on. I try my best to stop twirlers in their tracks. Once they see it has no effect on the field, they usually stop and save it for their stick tricks off the field.

Another bad habit is not running through ground balls. Grrrrr! I don't know what the technical term is, but when they cover the ball, then pull it back to get it in the pocket really irks me! I can see it being used under certain circumstances, but all the time? Either a bad habit or pure laziness. :monkey:

now, i get to take the role i love as hard *** coach JJ... stop spinning your stick, cover the butt of your stick, keep the head of your stick next to your ear - you're hanging it out too much, make sure to drop your shaft between your legs when your switching hands, keep your stick closer to your body - you make it really easy for a dman to get a poke check between your hands and strip you, and finally... STOP SPINNING YOUR STICK! sorry, y'all... everyone thinks it looks cool and all when you're messin around, but it's a bad habit that'll make you look like an idiot on the field when you get raped by a dman.

I used to spin my stick alot too and its hard to break that habit but once you do, there is a world of difference. Spinning makes it harder to throw and run. You become susceptable to lighter checks as well. So cut the spinning and youre good to go. Congrats on the off-hand.

yeah dont spin your stick so much. i know its fun to do when just folling around but just stick to the normal cradle in a game. i use to spin my stick a lot and it is a bad habit.

Dont ever spin your stick..its a very bad habit to get into..and its much easier for a d-pole to check...Also never leave your but end open....once you start playing up in like 10 - 12th grade you should catch the same way you shoot so u have a quicker release of the ball..but keep working on that off hand....whatever you can do with your strong hand you have to be able to do it with your left.

HeadHeartHustle
06-15-2006, 06:49 PM
u look uncomfortable with your stick when your cradleing (sp?) close to your body. Try a lil bit bigger and smoother cradles, and dont spin you stick. Work on stick tricks to improve the feel of your stick and just get comfortable.

k my computer sucks so i cant see most videos and the ones i can take forever so when you say he spins it is that when he brings it up to pass/shoot or like in a horizontal cradle
