How does a university go about dividing up 12 scholarships to approximately 28 players. I imagine you may have a top Blue chip player getting a full ride, seniors getting 50 - 70% and freshman who have yet to prove themselves 20-30%. Am I on target with this assumption?

most of time yes, it could also depend on the need of the player (ie financially)

Usually, very few players get full athletic scholarships. Also, the amount rarely changes from year to year, so a frosh can get as much as a senior. In addition, Need is not a factor in a true athletic scholarship, but may supplement one.

Yeah it's usually divided up pretty well and full rides are pretty rare and usually left for the goalies. Also, not many D1 Women's lacrosse teams have 12 full scholarships to give out. Some teams dont have any some teams have 8...it ranges depending on school funding.

The scholarship game is very complicated. Few wlaxers are offered full scholarships. There is no '4-year ride' as is often misconceived. Scholarships are renewed (or not) from year-to-year. There's a bit of 'what have you done for me lately?' sydrome, due to that. A player on full-scholarship who falls well below expectations may only be offered a half scholarship the next year. It's one of the reasons for player turnover.

Div3 and Ivy League schools don't offer athletic scholarships but still offer financial aid. Depending on the school and how prestigious the sport is there, coaches often have a way of finding aid for their most prized players.

At public universities, there's the further complication of in-state vs out-of-state scholarships. The out-of-state ones are worth more, since out-of-state tuition is higher. This may give a coach more money to work with when splitting up scholarships. Lax Magazine had a good article on the subject not too long ago (within the past 12 months, I think).

Thanks for the feedback. I think there are alot of misconceptions floating around about this topic even girls at the club level. I keep telling my girls keep those grades up - that's what you are going to school for.

Thanks for the feedback. I think there are alot of misconceptions floating around about this topic even girls at the club level.Let me guess, you're referring to girls who play for pay-to-play club teams, right? Ones w/ coaches who sell to players the idea that, 'you have to play for my elite club team to get noticed, otherwise you won't get offered a scholarship'

I keep telling my girls keep those grades up - that's what you are going to school for.Rule #1 - Choose a school you will be happy attending in the event you were to quit lax tomorrow.

Rule #2 - if you want a scholarship, go to the library.

lot more $$ for kids with good grades and SATs than anything else
