this'll be my first year and i am learning what i can or cant do. i learned that you can put you hands together in the middle of the stick and essentially punch someone. me question is, if someone gets by you, can you do that to someone in their back?

no. correct me if im wrong but i think that is an illigal body check. anything to the back or the helmet or something is illigal

if your talking about putting your hands together and extending halfway for a "wall check type thing, in the front its legal, in the back its a penalty (Push from behind)

Um, no. A check delivered with a punching blow is unneccessary roughness and a 1:00-3:00 penalty. What you can do is hold a player—from the front, side, or back—with your hands together using equal pressure to keep him from advancing. If you push with unequal pressure from behind, that's a technical foul.

well isn't it true laxref that if the punch is a result of the forward motion of a shot or pass it doesn't consitute unneccessary roughness?

No. If you contact another player while in the normal act of passing, shooting, or scooping, it is not a slash. I find it really hard to visualize how you could punch someone in the normal act of passing or shooting. Some contact, sure, but not a punch.

That would certainly be a rare occurence, more prevalent are the guys running into a scrum and either leading with their fists or their stick, both of which I don't like. Lead with the shoulder in proper bodychecking position.
