i have been playing lacrosse for a year now and i am just starting to try new shots. I have been trying the underhand shot and when i shoot the ball releases too quickly. does anybody have any advice on why this is or how i can fix it?

You probably don't have enough whip on your stick, so I wouldn't bother adjusting it and messing up your overhand shot. The underhand is overrated anyway.

i no a kid who has two sticks one is for facing off and underhand shots. his face off stick has so much whip on it, its almost impossible to use overhand. with you probably only playing one year you dont really need to shoot underhand so dont mess with your stick it wouldnt be worth it if you didnt like it

Are you guys kidding?

The right time to start learning underhand, sidearm and BTB shots is about a year after you've started.

Possibly even earlier depending on how fast you develop - I'd say right after you've mastered OH shots, and passing and catching while on the run, is the time you can start messing around with more advanced moves in non-game situations.

As far as your underhand shot releasing early - you probably do need a bit more whip to make it work.

The way I was shown to was grasp the shaft with hands close together, point your lead foot at your target, reach back with your head angled towards the ground (You can control the height of the shot by the angle you start from....closer to horizontal = lower shot, closer to vertical = higher shot), and stroke almost like a golf swing.

I have always found you have more ball control if its released 3/4 underhand rather then completely underhand.

You don't necessarily need whip--you can get a good underhand shot with "hold" which is like whip, but not quite the same. Search for "hold" and maybe put a V or U in your pocket if you REALLY want to develop an underhand shot. Just make sure you can still pass and shoot overhand, as well--otherwise, it's not worth it.

Underhand shots are very useful if you develope them before using them in game situations. My coach told me I really stood out today in tryouts because I had a fast and accurate underhand. The best way to practice them is to find a tall, wide fence and fire away unil you find the best technique for yourself. I started out shooting completly side arm but now I have it grooved like a slapshot.

You said you've been playing lacrosse for a year, make sure you have your strong hand regular shots down, and try working on your offhand. Underhand shots require time, room, and some practice, so try working on the regular stuff before you start to try anything that you may not even use. But if you really want to, find someone experience who knows how to properly shoot underhand, and learn the form, then just practice alot.

Not enough whip and you should probably try sidearm and then slowly go lower and lower till you can do an underhand shot.

Yeah i can nail the corners perfectly w/ 3/4 underhand but full underhand takes a while to perfect

You don't necassarily need whip for an underhand shot. As long as your stick isn't totally whipless you can do it. As your swing the stick underhand, you need to pull the bottom of your stick towards you more than you would with an overhand. Basically it's more pull and less push. The same thing goes for sidearm.

i agree totally. i can pinpoint shots way easier when throwing from slightly sidearm rather than completely underhand.

try reaching out a little more with your top hand. when i keep my elbows way in it is always a low release, but when i reach out and extend it goes higher.

also do what your coach wants or likes. i have a mean underhand shot i score most the time when i do it because ive worked on it and can go low or high, but my coach hates the shot so much because he thinks its not accurate that he yells at me everyday and he told the defenders if they see me go down for an underhand to knock me on my A**. all of it really depends on what your coach really prefers. dont get me wrong if i have the oppurtunity i will rip an underhand even if he yells at me but im just saying do what you coach wants.

overhanded shots are going to be your best shot in almost every aspect. the only reason people would not shoot overhanded every time is to either shoot away from the defender's stick...if he is stick on stick with you. or to get a faster shot. with an underhand shot, you can more easily confuse the goalie because, especially if there are people in the way, it will be harder for him to see the ball. you can prove this. if you sit across from a friend and have them throw a ball about a foot away from your head, to either side, it will be somewhat easy to catch. then, if you have him throw it directly at your head, you will notice it will be slightly harder to make contact with the ball with your hand. its all depth perception. now of course not every underhand shot is going to be at the goalie's head, but many go up high. low to high shots are very confusing in a goalie's perspective, and often seem to gain speed as they travel.

you should stick with over hand, but to answer your question, try "cocking" your wrists so the the head of your stick faces the goal, right about the time the head of the stick passes your back leg. changing the time your "****" your wrists, and your angle aswell as arm extension will make the ball change its flight, you can go from worm burner, to a riser, with minmal changes. If you can hone this skill, it will be extremely helpful.

Work on your fundamentals before trying to do any fancy shots, the only reason that you should be doing an underhand shot is to shoot it around a defender or throw off the goalie and even then it would probably be better just to pass it around and get a better opportunity to score
