Hey all. I'm currently a junior Attackman. This will be my second season playing lacrosse. Well, my team right now is quite new, and we only have one goalie, who is a senior. So our coach is going to be having tryouts for a back up goalie, who would pick up the our current goalies spot next season. Right now i'm a starting attackman, and i have excellent catching/passing/ball handling skills (i hit the wall alot, plus i'm always throwing around, and i even just sit at home cradeling while watching tv lol), but i'm a lousy shot, i'm usually the feeder, quick ball mover.

Anyways last season we had a two game day (the school we were playing is a small town, so they have 8th graders on their team, so we played an extra game with them), and for the first half i stepped into the cage with no previous experience besides the 5 minutes before hand of warming up. Anyways i thought i did well, i blocked three out of six shots.

So i'm contemplating on trying out for goalie. I'd still be able to play attack, and start (i'd probably only get to play one quarter anyways at goalie). The thing is, if i did get the position, i'd probably have to pick up full time goalie next year, even though i love attack. So whats your guys thoughts on this?

Well, if your team really needs you, and can't fin someone else as good as you or better, take the fall for your team, the coach may ask you to do it anyway. If your team needs you, you should take the fall, and go back on attack next year.

Here's some help with positioning. Search the forums for goalie training technique.

EDIT: I apparently don't read the first sentences.

If he goes out for goalie, he will be the full time goalie next year, he won't be able go back to attack.

Little known fact among younger players - coaches always put their best stick handler in net if they dont have a back up goalie. Trust me. I was the back up goalie for my college team for basically 3 years - no one bothered to tell me until I was a senior and our goalie got caught smoking pot and I got the "so if he can't go i need you to step up speech". If you've got the stick, and the balls, to be goalie then go for it. It's not easy to take shots off the shin and being a goalie kinda sucks in my opinion, but really its up to you. You dont HAVE to play goalie next year just because you try out this year. A lot can happen in one year...

My Goalie This year is in the same exact delima your in he played attack last season and steped up because we needed a goalie this season. Hes doing pretty well and mainly because hes experienced at lacrosse and has good stick skills, so i'm sure you'll be fine as well, but make the best choice for you, because it is your last season play high school lax next year. SO if you'd rather play attack, your coach will find someone else to step up.
