Play with a raquetball until he isnt afraid of getting hit anymore.

Peg him with it really hard numerous times until he's tough enough for it to not hurt.
Joking. Just play with a tennis ball until he gets good, or start by playing catch standing close together.

play with one of those soft lacrosse balls. i think warrior makes them. they are the size or a normal lacrosse ball but they are made of like this soft foam. their cool!

teach him the proper way to catch and then just toss him the ball with ur hand so he can practice catching
dont just start out with him trying to catch the ball as you wip it at him from your stick, of course he'll be afraid
i say get him to catch the ball by just throwing it to him from ur hand underhand till he gets the hang of it

get him to absorb the ball and not wack it away and also give him a helmet and let him throw it hard at u and if hes ten it shouldnt hurt and if he looks up to you then he will realize it doesnt help=

Throw it by hand right into his stick so he doesn't have to move the stick much, except to cushion it. Keep repeating to catch it as if it were and egg and to over exagerate the catching motion by having the stick end up on his shoulder. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
