How many of you guys wear arm pads when you play? Why or why not? Do you think I, being a middle school player, should wear them in a game?

(Vote yes for you do, no for you don't, include why or why not and if you think I should wear them in a post, please)

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

NO I absolutly(sp?) hate arm pads. I feel so uptight and immobile with them on. I hate when stupid refs make you wear them.

In goal i dont wear them, you can move so much more easily.

If your in middle school, im pretty sure they make you wear them...hell, the refs made me wear them last year in freshman...

At any rate, no arm pads.
1) They hinder mobility
2) Ball dosent hurt that much without them anyway
3) They make you look like a pansy (Im just saying what your all thinking)

Granted, I play club... but I still see some college women rocking them. And softball shinguards. It's disgusting. But out here, it seems to be pretty commonplace - my teammates were even appalled when I began boycotting my goalie pants and shinguards.

I just think unless for some reason you're required to (injury, rules, coach's rules, etc), take them off.

I never had to wear arm pads in middle school, but my coach made me wear leg pads when I first started. I stopped wearing them after the first game. But I have never worn arm pads in goal. Pretty much for the same reasons Endlesfinbulvet said.

And are you talking about normal arm pads that everyone else wears or goalie specific ones because the normal ones don't really have any padding on the inside of your arm which is where you'd get hit. I don't remember the ball ever hitting my elbow on a shot.

No I don't wear them, but to demongoalie, today before my game my coach was warming me up and I got absolutely anihilated in the elbow. Oh it gets better on the very next shot he hit me again in the same spot... yea I had a dead arm for a couple of minutes.

As a goalie you want to shed all of the heavy gear such as elbow and shoulder pads. It is all about fractions of seconds when reacting to the ball, that little extra weight could slow you down by fractions of a second.

I'll warm up with Brine slash guards that restrict my forearms and also add a couple ounces for extra weight. But I have never worn elbow pads. The worst I've done was wear knee pads, but that was because I bruised my patella and had to keep it covered for a couple games.

They can't force you to wear them. I mean, the required equipment for goalies is only a chest protector, helmet, and gloves.

Some leagues have their own gear requirements, usually meaning more padding instead of less.

In all my 9 years of playing, the only time I've ever seen goalies with them on was at the Cockeysville Tourney. The refs forced our goalie to wear them in middle school. Dumbest thing ever.

Although I am not a goalie, I voted for our team's goalie, who does not wear arm pads.

Gah, I feel like a sissy. Coach told me today (our first practice) that I had to wear them. They suck so much, I've hardly got the mobility I would normally have without them.

Speaking of wearing pads and everything... we have recess at our school. Yes, recess. I'm in the 8th grade and we have kids from Pre-K up to 8th at our school. They gave the little kids recess and it threw off the bell schedule, so now everyone has recess. Anyway, I was playing with one of those soft practice balls and the teachers flipped because I was playing goalie. The new resolution they made: I have to wear every single piece of my goalie gear if I want to play at recess. That means I have to wear my chest pad, my helmet, and my girdle (holds my cup, also has upper thigh pads). I laughed and told them "by the time I have all my stuff on, recess will be over!" ...They didn't budge.

I used to wear them in my first year. Yes I was scared. But this year I am going to shead them.

It's worse to wear them at all, rather than slowly "weaning" (for lack of a better word) off of them. You need confidence in goal, and being forced to wear unnecessary protection won't improve your confidence.

I'd wear armpads if I wanted my arms to be restricted severly...which is why I don't.
