Whats you favorite defensive setup, and why? Be sure to mention what position you play, i want every positions perspective.
I play point or cover point, and absolutely love zone defence. Your less likely to get beat by the attacker when you play zone, and its fun running full speed at the attacker, and psyching (sp?) them out. Also since I usually stay deep, i like being the last line of defence besides the goalie, and the fact that i block a lot of shots in this formation. I feel like you can sort of be more physical too like this.

When a team is good enough to play a sick zone defense I personally don't think there's anything better.

Yeah, but there are so few teams that can do it right.
I have never played a team that can effectively play zone...but I live in California...and all the bad teams try to play zone and it's soo easy to break them down..
I can see how it would be amazing when done right though..
I prefer man, just because I am used to it.
Oh and I play a home, but I find myself on defence pretty often.

I play goalie and man to man D is the best! I like it because it forces the offence to come in close to the crease and there is no feeling like stuffing a girl. Also because most penalitys are caused when the attackers rush in so free positions shots are awored and I own them!!!
I need a better description of what "man zone" is before voting.
Thing about 'man vs zone' is (and this pretty much applies to all sports that utilize man & zone defenses), if you have really good man D, then there's no reason to go to zone. You can't say the same about zone. Zone D was invented for teams who didn't match up well player-for-player against their opponents.
If Northwestern were to play your HS team tomorrow, do you think they'd need to go to zone against you? They're heads, shoulders, & feet better than your team at every position. They'd mark up tight man-to-man, and you'd be lucky if your team ever held the ball for more than ten seconds.

We play a "pressed zone". Essentially a zone-D set up between the 8 and the 12, with in your face pressure on the girl with the ball. If a girl cuts in with the ball everyone crashes, and for the most part she drops the ball. We also follow the cutter through on a cut.
It has been awesome this season and incredibly effective.

That'd work well...save for the fact that a decent team that can keep their heads up will make the pass to one of 6 other open girls.

Depends on your team's needs. The main goal of the defense is to prevent a shot from even happening. If you can reduce the amount of shots taken and increase the number of turnovers you force, I could care less what kind of defense you are running. As long as it's effective, by all means, us it! Now, if I was given 7 stellar defensive players, I would prefer to be in man vs. man coverage. But like I said, as a goalie, if you're just reducing the number of shots I get, I'm a happy goalie, and we all know you want a happy goalie :)

I like a man zone but a zone is my favorite. It is easier to get the slides in and you can play tighter, it makes forcing a turnover or an outside shot a lot easier.

man zone is when the defense plays man to man and zone. like 4 people play a zone and three play man- man

i like man against a settled attack and an agressive trapping zone for re-defending.
we play a man to man on D, but we have different modes....in one mode used for when we are up and the other team is being dumb and wasting time we just collapse to the 8 and watch them loose.the second mode we pressure just the ball, third mode we pressure ball and next pass on both sides and for the third mode its pressure everywhere. we also have a mode where we presure behind just to get the ball. my team is pretty fast so we math 1 on 1 pretty well so we dont play a full on zone.
we also have this re-defending trap that works really well...basically when we miss the shot and the other goalie gets it, we are in a zone and whereever the ball goes we double and then move to replace. its pretty awesome.

This is true, but most of the time the girl has no option but to back up, and at this point she gets checked and loses the ball.
