I wear one. Its really cut down, but its there. I don't really see a point in wearing a mouth guard since we have helmets, but there probably is.....
**Edit**
Now that I think about it your could still chip a tooth if you got hit the wrong way, so I guess its important. I probably shouldn't be playing with a cut down one either, because it probably doesn't help much. O well better a little protection then none.

Yea its required like everyone else said. I guess I understand why it is needed. Also I think it is so you dont bite your tounge off, at least thats one of the reasons for it in football.

I hope you don't play midfield/attack because a cut down mouthpiece is illegal. As for why you need it, it can actually prevent concussions too, keep you from biting your tongue and the ovious one of dmaaging your teeth. AND if you damage your teeth most mouthguards provide money as long as your wearing it correclty and it sounds like you're not.

well then... has anyone tried the mouthpiece style that eddie george wears (like a giant passifier that you can breath through), not as huge as those but you can still breath through the middle. do those help with the communication aspect?

actually, the biggest reason why you wear a mouthpiece is for concussions... that why YOU SHOULD NOT CUT IT DOWN. a chipped tooth is no big deal, but a concussion could lead to some major brain damage and concussion happen most commonly from you hitting the back of your jaw, so, that's why it's actually illegal to cut down your piece.

if you hate mouthguards but play a lot of contact sports do what I did, go to a dentist and get one custom formed....mine stays up no matter what and I can talk clearly.....it is azctually decently comfy and easy to breathe with since it is tight on my topt teeth and stays there....NFL quarterbacks use them a lot....

everyone it seems has mentioned concussions, and this is why. when you close your mouth, put your hand just forward of your ear. you will feel a bone moving. you see, when you close your mouth the back end of your mandible closes up your temple so that concussions are harder to come by. but when you just close yourmouth without a mouth guard you could chip a tooth, knock out a tooth, bite your tongue, or chomp it completly off. just a few things to remember when you decide to try to fake a mouth peice as you run on the field.

thanks mom ;). actually for field players i wouldnt imagine ever playing without one. but as a goalie and me having the big mouth that i do, i am always talking to the defense and always find myself being incumbered by a conventional mouth piece...

well... many goalies down here use the mouth plates that you can get at the orthodontist. you know those rubber things that ar just flat and dont cover the front of your tooth they give you to bite on to reduce the pain of tightened brackets... well.. the refs allow them since they are basically cut-down mouthpieces that have not been altered that way, and since they were not altered after manufactur then they are legal.
people on the field use them every now and then... but of course... they fall out every now and the too...

im a little confused... are they like a mouthpiece at all?
LatinBabe
04-17-2004, 11:27 PM
they go in your mouth...
more like a hard rubber cut in the shape of a semi-circle with a dip in the middle for your tongue.

i get my bell rung a lot in hockey, and if you just bite down on the mouthguard it goes away. it's alot better than a concussion.

We were scrimming on a saturday and our goalie got hit square in the head with a shot and he wasn't wearing his mouthguard and his pupils were big and everything, he couldn't play that day after that.

all players in high school are required to wear mouthpieces and do they ever help. I got hit pretty hard, not extremely and happened to bite my tonuge, even with the mouthpiece, i cut about 3mm into the skin and lost taste for abut a week. if i didnt have one on i can only imagine that i would have needed surgery

My little brother uses one for lacrosse, it's the same one he used for football. I'd rather have the old school ones, since in lacrosse you need to communicate more and the hits aren't as frequent or vicious.
Also, I've had those custom mouth guards, they work pretty well. You can even get them in customized colors...mine was garnet and black.

OPro makes great mouthguards I've heard and you can customize the colors. U-19 was sponserd by them.
XLR8 Mouthguards have breathing spots, really cushy teeth areas, and are just...nice. Lol. Check out their website, its really neat and explains all their features.

haha 45 bucks for a mouthpiece... if youre really concerned with your oral health then this might still be a large investment... and why would you want to color your mouthpiece, maybe one solid color, but can you honestly see it other than in the front unless you are some weird person and like mouthpieces...

It's all about personal preference. The custom one I got (through my dentist, I don't know if there was a brand name) was about $100, and the only reason I got it was that we had some healthcare money that would've gone away at the end of that year had we not used it. It was pretty cool, but I wouldn't pay my own money for something like that...I usually don't even think about putting a mouthpiece in anymore on the rare occasions I still play. It does serve a purpose, besides the concussions..etc, I've chipped teeth while playing tackle football..and that sucks.

A few comments about mouthguards:
They must cover ALL upper teeth. That means that a mouthguard that has been trimmed is illegal, and it means that if you have the mouthguard hanging out of your mouth, biting on the corner, you're NOT wearing a mouthguard as far as the rules are concerned.
Similarly, if you've chewed up your mouthpiece to the point where it doesn't cover your back teeth, get a new one.
They've changed the NCAA rules so failure to wear a mouthguard is now a technical foul. They did this because they couldn't get the NCAA officials to call it because they thought the penalty was too harsh. I think this was a bad idea, and I'd at least like to see them change it to a technical for having a legal mouthpiece and not wearing it and a 1:00 nonreleasable personal foul for not having a mouthguard at all or having an illegal one.
It's still a 1:00 nonreleasable foul under NFHS rules.

Oh, I forgot to include this game situation, which I saw not too long ago:
Team A is running its offense, and I spot A1 not wearing his mouthpiece. As I'm bringing the whistle up to blow the play dead and award the ball to team B, A2 shoots and the ball goes in. I immediately wave off the goal. Team A wasn't too happy, but that's what you get for not wearing your mouthpiece.
