Hi,
I am going to be coaching middle school girls lacrosse and I really dont know much about lacrosse. I was wondering if anyone could give some advise? Maybe some drills, websites, what a good practice would look like, maybe some running drills, that would be helpful. Tryouts are tomorrow and im starting to stress. Anything would be great.
thanks....
Jen

I was with you until the "tryouts are tomorrow" came out...

This means that my encouragement is probably a day late, but:

You are in the right place on this forum...as one coach to another, both of us relatively new to lacrosse, the information on this internet site is absolutley invaluable.

Read the tutorials here, read the current topics, get some books and videos out of the library and bookstore (hopefully, you've already done that)...

I learn something every day from this message board set...every, single, day!

Keep reading, keep learning, you will get better, I guarantee it...I'm over 50 years old, I "walk over" to lacrosse from inline hockey, where I am a member of the current USA Hockey InLine national championship team (50 & over Division), and after only a couple of months, I get compliments every day in our local rec program...even the eldest among us can learn and get better. If you apply the same caring that is stressing you out, you will get better and better at this.

Keep it up.

Good luck Jen! I've been a youth coach for about 3 years now & grab a book a year just to try to get something new. The best one I've read so far is The Confident Coach's Guide to Coaching Lacrosse. Simple enough to be able to teach skills thoroughly, and has some advanced topics explained simply.

Good luck & feel free to e-mail me if you'd like to chat!

Ive made it through 3 days of my very first days of lacrosse.. However, I feel like im not teaching the grils much becuase im not confident enough to correct them on their skills cause I myself dont know how to craddle, catch, etc. But im learning...thanks for your help though...

Jen - Hope tryouts went well and that practice is going along smoothly. I'll first point you in the direction of Kevin Sheehan to start out with. The articles describe boys and show boys stuff, but it works just as well with girls. I've used them with my high school girls team actually, with great success. The first article is for your field players, the second article is for your goalie (the goalie article will get your goalie ready to go in no time)

Please post specific questions about skills you need to work on or describe the situation at hand and I'm sure we'll all be happy to help you out with drills, tricks, games etc you can do to get your kids motivated, playing lacrosse, and kicking butt.
