I've been playing lacrosse for about 2 months so far (80% of it in pre-season) and I was just notified that I've been moved up from JV to Varsity. I play Offensive Middy but the Varsity coach told me to be a defensive middy.
But I wanted to know what I should do right now to prepare for Varsity (its spring break at the moment for me). I dont want to be the worst on the team, nor do i want to be moved down to JV. Any tips guy? seeing that u guys are from maryland and all those northern states and been playin for over 2 years and such.
.and im a freshman btw.

Defensive midfield? Ok..remember a few key things...SLIDING...your coach or defensive coach should outline your sliding packages or sliding schemes during practice, pay attention to HOT and COLD slides. Remember to NEVER, EVER let your man in the pipe area. The pipe area is the middle area...If your facing the cage imagine two invisible barriers jetting out from the two pipe sides. They go straight forward and continue until the top of the box. DONT LET YOUR MAN IN THERE. This is where he is most dangerous. Push him down the side of the box if he drives on you. Thats the most basic stuff for now.

all good advice. I have one question, are you going to play long stick or short stick?

Yeah and if you are playing shortstick, which is what i play, remember that theres gonna be 2 short sticks on the field and 4 long poles. You dont have to get all fancy with checks and try to take the ball away. Pressure him, but getting him to pass the ball to an offender that has a long pole on him is a victory in that now he's got to get around 6 feet of pole, instead of 3 and a half.
Body positioning and footwork
Lastly, put it all on the line for them groundballs. And always be sprinting 100%. Alot of the guys on my team jog off the field and then what could have been a fast score turns into a slow paced offense because a d middy didnt feel like pushing himself a little harder to get the o mid on.

I love playing defensive midfield. Its defense that wins the game. On defense, you got to work as a team to shut down a good offense, you cant to it all by yourself.
as the other guy said, go all out for the ground ball, theres nothing better than going into a group of 5 or 6 guys fighting for the ball, picking it up and running out of there.
One suggestion, when you scoop the ball up, run. Dont stand or back up. Scoop then get out of there and that will bring the ball to your offense.
