yeah man, and u dont have big equipment. you dont need it man. you should ask him about it and ask if he knows he just spent $2000 on illegal equipment.

yeah if his equipment is waaaaay too big then its obviously illegal , he'll never be able to play with it , and dont worry about getting annoyed it will just frustrate you and make you not play to your full capability , just make sure you show him up , show him that you dont need huge pads to stop a shot ...

That post made me laugh. It sounded so immature. So many goalies wear oversized equipment - you just gotta face it. Dallus Eliuk said in Inside Lacrosse "Goaltenders are over-padded these days. It really isnt necessary to wear as much as we do..." It used to be something that bothered me, but I care less about it now because 1) CLA made new strict rules and 2) most of the time these massive goalies suck balls and cant stop crap if you get em moving or shoot at their legs. I like it the way it is. You need some bulk, but you dont want to go overboard. You still have to be athletic and be able to move and pass the ball well.
My solution: Make the all the nets 4'X4'6 after Midget. Then it will be an easier adjustment for playin in the NLL 4'X4'9 nets for everyone. And then the oversized goalies advantage will become a disadvantage.

Yea man, seriously, nothing you can do about it. Plus, it's going to happen your entire life. Last year, I saw both (actually, all 4 of) the goaltenders I played with using illegal equipment and it gave them an advantage over me but really it only bothers me when the other teams goalies are doing it, because I know the coaches know our goalies are illegal and they can do something about it, you can't do anything about the other teams (except for make the 'call' but there's nothing you can do personally).

I wouldn't worry about it Z. Just focus on your game plan - work on your weaknesses and exploit your strengths - don't worry about the other guy when you can be working on you. All things being equal - a well prepared goalie, mentally focused and ready for game will always have the advantage.

Don't worry about it man, you know from last year that bigger pads doesn't always mean success. Just work your magic and you'll do fine.

Can you request an "equipment check" during a game?? Is that considered too "bush league" to do??

You can, it just depends who you ask, your coach or the coach of the team your calling. I think it's a great tool to keep goalies honest.

In a situation like that, if team A wants to call for an equipment check on team B's goalie, then team B will likely fire it right back at team A. Kind of like the old "you don't do it to me and I won't do it to you" kind of thing here.

You can request the equipment check. However, a team is only allowed one request per stoppage in play. During that stoppage, the team making the request must SPECIFICALLY point out which ONE AND ONLY ONE AREA they want measured (ex. width of arm pad on the bicep seems more than 9").
I have heard of such a call happen at a crucial time in a game and it nearly worked at the 2003 Founders Cup in Port Coquitlam between Juan de Fuca and Edmonton. In the last two minutes of the third period in a tie game, the Edmonton coach requested an equipment check on the Juan de Fuca goalie. The referees found that the JDF goalie had illegal equipment and was given a 2-minute penalty for the measurement. On top of that, the JDF goalie had to correct the area that was measured. Edmonton was given a power play and also got the advantage of shooting on a smaller goalie on top of that. After moving the ball around, Edmonton scored. However, the shot clock had expired before the ball entered the goal, so the goal was disallowed. JDF then came back up the floor short handed and scored the winner.

Z, dont worry about it. Your twice the goalie he is, and your half his size in net. Just remember to stay calm, and do your thing in net.

Just comes down to the league enforcing the rules. If they aren't enforced very frequently, guys will know they can get away with it and bend the rules. Whether its with this or anything else, I find it just as rewarding to take pride in being the guy that wins and does it within the rules!
